West Nile Virus expected to be even worse

May 16, 1963 Dedication ceremonies for the first of two new homes for the aging in the area were held. Lakeview Nursing Home, a facility with 22 rooms for residents, was to admit its first residents to their new home sometime later in the week. The facility expected to employ about 20 people.

Eleven new teachers were hired for the Glenwood school faculty. They included Gerald DeMars, Helen Hendricks, Lola Lommel, Nancy Frisby, Donald Coleman, Julianne Hanson, Mary Kane, Donald Bucher, James Inwards, John Linder and Boyd Heuselid.

Three honor students were named at the Cyrus High School. They were Gilbert Ahlstrand, Carol Dosdahl and Karl Retzlaff. The three were recognized by Principal Robert Martinson for their academic and other achievements. 

May 17, 1973 – Twenty-two honor students were named just prior to graduation ceremonies at the Glenwood High School. They were Paul Bennett, Debra Boelke, Phyllis Christiensen, Denis Egdorf, Brenda Ellendson, Dawn Hesse, Susan Iverson, Rebecca Jacobson, Rick Kleinschmidt, William Lee, Susan Lock, Mitchell Long, Thomas Mork, Joseph Pitzen, Sharon Rupp, Robert Schluter, Phillip Serrin, Sandra Skonberg, Dean Staffanson, Randall Torfin, Helen Twite and Richard Wheeler.

The annual Waterama button sales began with the first sale to past Admiral Harold Eastlund. Unc Anderson sold the button. Current Admiral Harlan Heidecker was pictured with the two in the Tribune. 

This was also the time of year for confirmation in area churches. Pictured in the Tribune from Chippewa Falls Lutheran Church were Janet Clark, Gloria Hamborg, Debbie Pearson, Sharon Rust, Jamie Tweit, Kurt Moen and Byron Braaten. 

May 19, 1983 – The Tribune reported that the fishing opener was c-c-c-cold and windy. Some people caught fish, but northwest winds, which whipped up white caps on area lakes, and temperatures just barely over 40 degrees kept the day from being to pleasant.

C.R. “Swanee” Swanson, a Glenwood native presently in the Twin Cities area, was reported to have scrapped retirement to play the sounds of the Big Bands. He had owned Northwest Organ there for many years and had now put together a 13-piece band to pay mostly tea and dances in the metropolitan area.

Eighty-seven seniors were about to graduate from Glenwood High School Commencement speakers had been chosen; they were Kathleen Morris and Robert Haima. 

May 17, 1993 – School board members of the newly consolidated District 2149 had agreed on $90,000 in budget cuts and $135,000 in transfers to general fund but really didn’t know yet if that would lead to a balanced budget for the 1993-94 school year or not. The problem that had faced the board was that it didn’t have a handle on anticipated income because the Minnesota legislature had not approved a school funding formula for the next two years.

Ground was broken for Parkview Court, a 32-unit elderly housing project which was to be one of the first of its kind in the nation in a rural area. Pictured in the Tribune breaking ground were Gordon Amble, Doug Reker, Matt Brietbach, Don Schaub, Oliver Hoplin and Stan Shuster.

Seventy-seven kindergartens at E.N. Nordgaard Elementary School had graduated and were to head ti first-grade the following year. During the ceremonies held in the school gymnasium, the students sand and then lined up to receive their diplomas. Hundreds of parents, relatives and friends were present for the ceremonies, which even included marching into the gym to Pomp and Circumstance.

May 19, 2003 – The problems with the West Nile Virus experienced by area home owners last year are expected to be even worse this year. Experts predict that the potential problems will increase, because even more virus-bearing mosquitoes are expected.

Parents and residents who rely on life guards at Glenwood’s beach can breathe sigh of relief as Mayor John R. Stone was able to utter those words after weeks of uncertainty.

May 13, 2013 – Winter 2013 wasn’t just long for humans; area fish were affected by the harsh conditions as well. Fish Kill was widespread this year, with thousands of dead fish lining the shores of area lakes last weekend now that ice is off. 

During his first-hour class at Minnewaska Area High School, a very surprised Wade Admundson accepted the first annual Minnewaska PTA Teacher of Excellence Award, which included a trophy and a $500 check to be used in his classroom.

It has been a long time coming, but spring cleaning time is here and Tom Kraemer Inc. is once again hosting the annual Community Clean-up Day this Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon. The day will go on, rain or shine.
