Terrace Mill turning 100
May 30, 1963 – The 1963 class of Glenwood high school, 104 strong, received their diplomas during commencement exercises before more than 1,500 relatives and friends who jammed the high school auditorium. R.F. Patterson, dean of the school of business at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, addressed the seniors. The program concluded after Jane Paul’s valedictory and the benediction by Pastor Golberg.
Pictured in the Tribune were the county’s three new dairy princesses. They were Corlyce Phelps of Ben Wade Township, Bonnie Oeltjen of Leven Township and Judy Anderson of Ben Wade Township.
The fate of SOO Line passenger trains Nos. 13 and 14 was in the hands of the Interstate Commerce commission in Washington, D.C., following a series of three hearings in St. Paul, Glenwood and Harvey, N.D. One thing was for certain; 13 and 14 would be in operation until Nov. 17 at least, no matter what the ICC ruled in the meantime.
May 31, 1973 – A class of 100 Glenwood seniors were to take part in their final activity in high school during the 82nd annual commencement exercises at the Central High School auditorium. A crowd of around 1,200 friends and relatives for the graduates was expected to be on hand for the start of the ceremonies. Named as speakers for the class were Philip Serrin of Glenwood and Thomas Mork of Lowry. Both were scholastic honor students.
Any hope that the Starbuck and Glenwood areas would get together to form one hospital district apparently “went out the window” with the announcement that the Minnewaska hospital board of directors in Starbuck had voted unanimously to form their own hospital district to service western Pope County and the fringe areas.
Glenwood high school principal Edward Keckeisen brought suit against independent school district 612 and each of the seven members of the board of education for terminating his contract effective at the close of current school term. Keckeisen, who had been high school principal here for the past three years, was bypassing the state court system and had decided to carry the appeal to federal district court.
May 26, 1983 – Fourteen vocational carpentry students built a home for their project. This home was to be auctioned off at the vocational center building on highway 55. Bidding was to start $16,500 for the eight-room house, which was approximately 26 by 46 feet and had approximately 1,200 square feet of space.
Brent Cochran, the newly elected president of the Minnewaska Showstoppers, announced that the summer musical to be presented at Waterama was to be one of the most captivating musicals and motion pictures of all time.

May 31, 1993 – Ninety Minnewaska Area High School seniors took part in their last formal ceremony as they marched down the gymnasium aisle to receive their diplomas. The 90 students were the second class to graduate from MAHS. With consolidation of districts approved by voters which was to be effective July 1, 1993, this class was the last to graduate from the school as a tri-district joint venture.
Sid Domier, who had worked at Glenwood Rexall Drug for the past two years, had purchased the business from Ivan and Liz Dorn. Dorn would continue to work as a pharmacist in the pharmacy several days a week.
Over 21,000 in local scholarships were presented to 29 of the graduating seniors from Minnewaska Area High School. Brian Malyon, who graduated as co-valedictorian of the class of 1993, was awarded a total of $5,000 in local scholarships. Lis Hollerman, who shared the honors of co-valedictorian, received a total of $4,100 in local scholarships.
June 2, 2003 – The Terrace Mill will be 100 years old this summer. And to commemorate that fact, a summer’s worth of activities have been planned. The mill will be open to the public June 6, and the public can visit the historic site through September.
There were no last minute miracles for Glenwood in terms of Local Government Aid cuts, as proposed by the Minnesota Legislature. In fact for 2003, a year for which the city established its budget in December after being told it would receive $805,436 in LGA, the figure will be cut $695,914, a reduction of $109,522.
May 27, 2013 – Minnewaska Area Schools will be filling another administrative position after approving the resignation of Diane Cordes, effective June 30.
The skies cleared and the wind calmed down Wednesday evening, allowing a few anglers to launch their boat and fish Lake Minnewaska. The weather has been unseasonably cold and rainy for the past week, keeping most of the boats docked. This weekend large and smallmouth bass become legal game fish in Minnesota.
During her report to commissioners at last Tuesday’s board meeting, Human services Director Nicole Names touched on a subject close to home for many area parents and day care providers: the narrow passage of a bill just last Monday that, if signed into law by Gov. Dayton,will allow day care workers to unionize.
