The Minnewaska baseball team went 1-2 last week, splitting a doubleheader at Montevideo last Tuesday before losing a close game at home to Osakis, Thursday.

The Lakers are now 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the WCC heading into this week’s action.

Minnewaska is set to play on the road for five games this week, starting with doubleheaders at Melrose, Monday (today) and at West Central Area, Tuesday (tomorrow) before playing a single game at Fergus Falls, Friday.

Monte 8-3, Waska 4-10

The Lakers split a doubleheader at Montevideo last Tuesday night, losing the first game 8-4, but coming back to win the nightcap, 10-3.

Dylan Alexander and PJ Johnson led the Lakers with four hits each during the twinbill, while Noah Jensen had a two-run homer in the opener.

In the first game, the Lakers and Thunderhawks were tied at 2-2 through five innings before Montevideo scored six in the sixth inning to go up 8-2.

The Lakers tried to rally with two runs in the top-half of the seventh, but it was too-little, too-late.

Noah Jensen’s two-run homer in the fourth gave Minnewaska a short-lived 2-1 lead, while Dylan Alexander had a two-run, one-out triple in the seventh.

Also coming through with hits for the Lakers were Levi Johnson, PJ Johnson, Austin Weber, Alex Panitzke and Thomas Poegel.

PJ Johnson went the distance on the mound, taking the loss to fall to 2-1 for the season.  He gave up five hits, two earned runs and four walks with two strikeouts.  The six runs he allowed in the sixth inning were all unearned.

•  In the second game, Alex Panitzke pitched a five-hitter and Jack Majerus, Dylan Alexander and PJ Johnson had three hits each to lead the Lakers to the 10-3 victory.

Minnewaska Area trailed 3-2 before scoring five runs in the bottom-half of the fourth to take the lead for good.

Majerus was 3-for-3 with three runs, a double, triple, two RBI, a walk and stolen base, while Alexander was 3-for-4 with a run and RBI, and PJ Johnson was 3-for-4 with a run, two doubles and two RBI.

That was more than enough offensive support for Panitzke, who pitched five innings, giving up five hits, three runs and three walks with four strikeouts before giving way to Majerus, who shut out Montevideo over the final two innings.

Conner Erickson also had  a big game, going 2-for-3 with two runs, a walk and stolen base, while also registering hits were Levi Johnson and Noah Jensen.

Osakis 6, Minnewaska 2

The Lakers were held to two hits during a 6-2 home loss to Osakis, Thursday night at Marthaler Field.  Minnewaska trailed 6-0 before scoring its only two runs of the game in the fourth inning.

Although the Lakers had only two hits, they did have the benefit of seven walks, one hit-by-pitch and four Osakis errors.  However, Minnewaska left nine runners on base.

In the fourth, Alex Panitzke and Thomas Poegel led off with walks before Levi Johnson’s two-out single plated both runners.

Dylan Alexander had the only other hit for the Lakers, while Noah Jensen and Panitzke both walked twice.

Osakis’ Jack Johanson outhit the Lakers by himself, going 4-for-4 with a run and RBI to lead the Silverstreaks.

Jack Majerus, the first of three Laker pitchers, took the loss.  He allowed four hits, five runs (only one earned) and one walk over two innings with four strikeouts.  Alexander pitched four solid inning in relief before Erickson pitched the final inning.
