Softball team eliminated by WCA in 3AA opener

The Minnewaska Area softball team ended its season in the opening round of the Section 3AA Softball Tourney. The Lakers were seeded seventh and lost to the second-seeded WCA Knights last Tuesday night in Barrett, 12-0.
The Lakers ended the season with a 2-14 overall record, which included a 2-10 mark in the WCC to tie with Montevideo and Benson for sixth place. Morris Area won the league title with a perfect 12-0 record, followed by WCA and Melrose Area (both 9-3), Sauk Centre (6-6), and Montevideo, Benson and Minnewaska Area (all 2-10).
Seniors lost to graduation from this year’s team, coached by Jason Weber and Jacalyn Skoglund, are Leslie Murken and Kylee Klassen.
Among the regulars this year for the Lakers, Emma Poegel led the team with a .419 batting average followed by Ally Mogard (.324), Jenna Drewes (.295) and Leslie Murken (.294).
WCA 12, Minnewaska 0
The Lakers were shut out by West Central Area in the Section 3AA opener last Tuesday night at Barrett, 12-0. Two WCA pitchers combined for a five-inning no-hitter.
WCA scored three in the first, one in the second, three in the third and five more in the fourth to end the game early due to the 10-run rule.
Mataya Mix took the loss on the mound for the Lakers, giving up six hits, 12 runs (seven earned) and six walks with seven strikeouts.
Minnewaska Area did get one walk each by Leslie Murken, Brooklynn Armstrong, Emma Poegel and Jenna Drewes.
