Edward Barsness, Ralph Griebenow, Agenes Engebretson, G. Borghild Dahl, and Laura Gorder will graduate from Starbuck High School on Thursday, May 29.

Casselton, N.D. – Officials decided that the death of Oscar Ness, whose body was found on the Great Northern near Casselton, was due to an accident.

The stork visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Heegard Monday morning and left the sweetest baby girl that ever came to gladden any heart. A glance at Mr. Heegard’s face early Monday morning told the story and an orange was coming our way. 

Marry Farmers Boys’ Picnic will be held Sunday, June 15 at the old grounds in the Tharaldson grove near Langhei Store. Programs, local talent, concerts and athletic ports will be part of the entertainment in the afternoon.

100 YEARS AGO

From May 18, 1923

The Fron Choir gave the Cantata ‘Great Deliverance’ at the church last Sunday afternoon, and again in the evening. The Choir of seventy-five voices is newly organized under the direction of Rev. M.C. Johnshoy. Soloparts were taken by Mrs. O.V. Opheim, Noel Johnson and Harold Peterson. The choir was assisted by a six piece orchestra consisting of Mrs. Peter Brandvold, M.P. Eidberg and Oscar Olson, Violins; Edner Rolien, flute; Ed Olson, trombone; Mrs. Olaf Wollan, piano.

The tenth annual Women’s Week of the Morris A.C. School will be held June 12 to 15. Supt. Miller says the entire School of Agriculture will be turned over to the women of Western Minnesota during the short course. 

A baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Victor Gorder last Sunday. 

A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Alfson on Saturday of last week.

The White Bear Lake Farm Unit met at Nels Spangruds Tuesday evening. Selma Ranum sang a solo and Martin Aune gave a speech. After lunch was served, Miss Olive Peterson, county nurse, brought out her scale and weighed all those present. White Bear Lake has some fine specimens of health, as six of those weighed were over 200 lbs., the heaviest weighing 238lbs., The tallest person was 76 inches.

From May 18, 1933

Starbuck made its initial debut in the West Central Minnesota League on Sunday by winning the opening game with Montevideo on the home diamond 9 to 3. The following young men are on the Starbuck team: Engen, Tangen, Wesen, Aaberg, Dullum, Wollan, Holten, Nelso, Opheim, Ophaug and Olson.

One hundred and thirty mothers and daughters attended the banquet given in honor of Mother’s Day at Fron church parlors Saturday evening.

National Hospital Day was fittingly observed here on Friday when over 140 people visited the hospital. The lady’s auxiliary served lunch to visitors in the hospital dining room. The Minnewaska Hospital has served this community well and is a distinct credit to the territory it serves.

Miss Clarice Elie of Morris, daughter of Mrs. Emil Steen of Starbuck, and Cpl. Ronald F. Hills of Donnelly were married Tuesday at the parsonage of the St. Theresa Church in Donnelly. The couple will make their home in Macon, Georgia where he will be stationed. 

Word has been received here that Mr. and Mrs. Manfred Alfson of Minneapolis are the parents of a son, Gary Jon born May 13.

Mrs. Nels Stenson received word Monday morning that a baby girl, Julie, had been born to Mr. and Mrs. Fran Fairfield of Osakis Sunday evening. This is their second child. 

The following young people were confirmed Sunday at Minnewaska Church: Arthur Feigum, Elaine Skeslien, Eleanore Rasmussen, Gloria Kirkwold and Norma Engen. 

Miss Mae Larson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ole Larson of Brandon became the bride of Clarence Rosby, son of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Rosby of Lowry May 9. The couple will make their home on a farm near Lowry. 

School notes from District 37: The following students were on the honor roll for the 5th six week period: Della Standafer, Dora Standafer, Carol Rud, Clinton Rud, Jerome Jackson, Gerdes Billehus, Douglas Opdahl, Shirley Rostad and Robert Bilelhus. The following Pupils had perfect attendance: Robert Billehus, Raymond Jackson, Helene Billehus, Douglas Opdahl, Jerome Jackson, Gerdes Billehus, Paul Billehus, Carol and Clinton Rud.

Funeral services for Lars Hanson, 74, were held at Fron Lutheran Church May 16. He is survived by his wife, Ingeborg and the following children: Mrs. Gladys Anderson, Mrs. Raymond (Bertha) Noyes, Mrs. Edner (Marion) Dokken of Starbuck, Mrs. Rudy (Florence) Schiller of Alexandria, Mrs. Julius (Mabel) Hoium of Minneapolis, Henry, Clarence, Ingvald, Franklin, and Helmer Larson of Starbuck, Glenmore Larson of Hancock and Selmer Larson of Grand Forks, ND. 

Gail Myking, Nancy Wesen and Ednard Barsness, Jr. were confirmed at Minnewaska Lutheran Church Sunday.

A group of relatives helped little Miss Eleanor Nali celebrate her 3rd birthday Saturday evening.

Businessmen and interested persons met Monday evening at the Starbuck Community Rooms to organize the Starbuck Area Development Corporation. At the close of the meeting, the board met and elected officers. Richard Engebretson will serve as the president; Chuck Blocher, vice president; Don Espenson, treasurer; and Tom Guggisberg, secretary. 

The Starbuck City Council is still pondering over the garbage hauling problem. Previously they had received three bids and tabled action on them. Now they will be asking for bids on a garbage truck with definite specifications and options. The reason for this is to get a unit which council feels is satisfactory to them and will accomplish a complete job.

Linda Andert, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Andert, rural Starbuck has been named to the Snowmobile Driver’s Advisory Board for the 1973-74 year. She has earned this honor because of the many races she has won or placed second in. She is also overall American Snowmobile Ass’n 1973 Champion.

40 YEARS AGO

From May 18, 1983

Thirty seven seniors will graduate from Starbuck High School May 22. Speakers will be the three top honor students, Rebecca Stoen, JoAnn Opdahl and Darla Refsal. 

Funeral services for Marie Lee, 86, were held from the Fron Lutheran Church May 12. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Max (Marlys) Seeley of Minneapolis.

Mr. and Mrs. David Boots announce the birth of a son, James Patrick, born April 20. 

Angela Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Johnson, has been selected as a state finalist in the 1983 Miss Minnesota National Pre-Teen Pageant held at the Holiday Inn downtown Minneapolis Sept. 3.

Twenty-two young men from Starbuck have been working together and have formed the Starbuck Jaycees Chapter.

The Lowry School District #30 will be closing it’s doors next week after serving the Lowry area for over 100 years.

Gen Gunvalson was recognized recently for her extensive and continued volunteer work at the Cyrus Math, Science and Technology School by the Outstanding School Volunteer Awards program. Gen has given 40+ years to the Cyrus area. 

Bernice Ronnie and Walter Reisrud were crowned queen and King at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home last week during National Homes for Aging week.

Funeral services for Harland M. Buchmann, 72, were held May 3 at Fron Lutheran Church. He is survived by his wife, Clarice, of Starbuck. 

T.J. Vintage, Inc., owned by Tilford Jergenson has been sold to Gloyd Wellmann. 

Janell Bright, a 1977 graduate of Cyrus High School and the daughter of Mert and Wayne “Pete” Bright of Cyrus was recently elected to the Fergus Falls Community College Athletic Hall of Fame.

The Starbuck City Council met on May 12 and received an update on the progress of the storm sewer improvement project. Larry Van Hout, engineer from Widseth Smith Nolting, presented his latest plans for the project.

He discussed engineering plans for each individual street showed illustrations of those plans. The plans display areas of the project such as where the storm sewers will hook up and where the sediment basin will be.

A bike path from Starbuck to Glenwood with a branch to Minnewaska Area High School will be a reality in as little as 12 months. 

The Pope County Board voted Wednesday to accept an agreement with Stevens County to share a Veterans Service Officer.

The Cyrus City Council met for just over an hour on May 14 at the Cyrus City Hall building. Attorney Brent Waddell passed around a preliminary copy of what the ordinance book for the city will look like. Waddell said he was still working on deciding the organization of it and will hopefully have it done in the next couple months. 

The Starbuck City Council approved for a City Clerk Treasurer during its regular meeting on May 13 at the Starbuck Community Center. City Administrator Sunny Schultz said Mayor Bruce Baskewell and herself had met with the auditor and they had some concerns. The audit cannot be completed until all meeting minutes have been submitted. 

On Monday Starbuck City Park will serve as a backdrop for the annual Starbuck Memorial Day Service. Held at the bandshell in city park, the Starbuck Memorial Day service will begin at 10:30 a.m. In the event of inclement weather, the Memorial Day Service will be moved to the Starbuck Community Center.
