Following his sixth year overseeing the Minnewaska Area School District, Superintendent Chip Rankin earned high marks from the school board during his annual evaluation.

The Minnewaska Area Schools Board of Education held a closed session on Monday, August 21 at the regular board meeting to conduct Superintendent Rankin’s performance review. School Board Chair Chad Barsness presented the results and noted that an annual superintendent evaluation is required by state law.

The Evaluation rated Rankin’s performance in 5 different areas, which were broken down into these main categories:

• Governance and board relations

• Community Relations

• Staff relations

• Business and Finance

• Instructional leadership

For each metric, the school board assigned a score of 1-6, with one being unacceptable performance and six significantly exceeding expectations.

Rankin’s scores were almost entirely 4s, 5s and 6s, with business and finance being his strongest area. Rankin did not score a one or two in any of these categories. Rankin was given two areas of emphasis this school year while maintaining the other three areas.

“Minnewaska Area Schools Superintendent Chip Rankin continues to perform admirably with continued growth in all five areas of his evaluation, especially considering the role of school superintendent continues to prove more challenging across our region, state, and nation.” Chairman Barsness said. “That is no small feat, and congratulations to you. You are smart, thoughtful, and dedicated, and you show it every day here, and we are grateful for your leadership.”

We are honored that Superintendent Rankin accepted our new 3-year contract proposal as the Superintendent of Minnewaska Area Schools, serving through the 2026-2027 school year.
