Tennis team moves two wins away from WCC title

The Minnewaska Area girls picked up two more wins last week, beating YME (7-0), Tuesday, and MACCRAY (6-1), Thursday. The Lakers, who improved to 6-0 in the conference and 9-5 overall, also hosted Osakis last Monday, losing 6-1.
In the results that follow is also information about the team’s results at the Pine City quadrangular last Saturday.
This week, the team is set to go on the road for a pair of matches beginning with a contest at NLS, Monday (today) and continuing with a match at Melrose Area, Thursday, Sept. 21.
at Pine City quadrangular
The Lakers split a pair of matches at the Pine City quadrangular last Saturday. Minnewaska fell to Pine City in one match, 6-1, but also earned a 4-0 victory over Chisago Lakes in another match that was shortened due to rain.
The Lakers were also set to play NLS at Pine City, but that match was canceled due to rain.
Against Pine City, the Lakers earned their lone point at third singles where Rachel Rankin was victorious by a 6-4, 6-1 score, but Pine City won the other six matches in straight sets.
The closest the Lakers were to another point was at first singles, where Alia Randt fell 6-2, 6-4 and at third doubles where Addy Heid and McKenna Uhde lost 6-2, 6-3.
During the win over Chisago Lakes, Megan Thorfinnson earned a 6-2, 6-2 win at second singles, Rachel Rankin won 6-2, 6-0 at third singles, Kaylen Bake prevailed at fourth singles 7-6 (8-6), 6-4, and Katie Sorenson and Norah VanZee won 6-0, 3-6, 14-12 tiebreaker at third doubles for four Laker points before rain ended the rest of the match.
Osakis 6, Minnewaska 1
The Lakers fell to 7-5 overall with a 6-1 home loss to Osakis last Monday night. Megan Thorfinnson earned the only point for Minnewaska with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at second singles.
Rachel Rankin lost a close three-set match at third singles (6-3, 5-7, 10-3 tiebreaker), while Addy Heid fell 6-4, 6-2 at fourth singles.
In the other four matches, Osakis gave up five total games or less.
Leah Maddock, the top player in the section, leads the Osakis team, which should be the favorite in the section tournament at the end of the season.
Minnewaska 7, YME 0
The Lakers lost just eight total games during a 7-0 sweep of Yellow Medicine East last Tuesday night at home. Minnewaska Area, which improved to 8-5 overall and 4-0 in the conference, lost five total games in the four singles’ matches and three in doubles.
Rachel Rankin, playing first singles for the first time, won easily at first singles (6-1, 6-0), while Avarie Uhde earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at second singles, Olivia Danielson prevailed 6-1, 6-1 at third singles and Brianna Erickson gave up one game during a 6-0, 6-1 victory at fourth singles.
In doubles’ play, Alia Randt and Megan Thorfinnson teamed up for a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at first doubles, Addy Heid and Katy Vold also blanked their opponents at second doubles, 6-0, 6-0, and Kaylen Blair and Katie Sorenson won 6-3, 6-0 at third doubles to complete the 7-0 win.
Waska 6, MACCRAY 1
The Lakers earned their second win in three days with a 6-1 victory at MACCRAY, Thursday. Minnewaska Area lost only nine games in sweeping the three doubles’ matches as Olivia Danielson and Avarie Uhde won at first doubles (6-0, 6-1), Katy Vold and Katie Sorenson prevailed at second doubles (6-4, 6-1) and Addy Heid and Norah VanZee won easily at third doubles (6-2, 6-1).
The Lakers also picked up three points in singles as Alia Randt earned a 6-1, 6-3 victory at first singles, Rachel Rankin won 6-1, 6-0 at second singles, and Kaylen Blair earned a 6-0, 6-2 victory at fourth singles.
