Tennis team opens up WCC schedule with two wins

The Minnewaska Area girls tennis team won a pair of WCC matches last week over Benson-KMS (6-1) and Morris Area-WCA (5-2).
The Lakers, who improved to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the conference, have a very busy week ahead with a match at home against Montevideo, Tuesday (tomorrow), at LQP-DB, Thursday, and at the Pine City quadrangular, Saturday.
Addy Heid, who went 2-0 last week at third doubles and fourth singles, continues to lead the Lakers with an 8-2 record, while Alia Randt, who plays first singles, is 7-3, and Katie Sorenson, Megan Thorfinnson, Katy Vold and Rachel Rankin are all 6-4.
• Minnewaska Area is coming off a 9-10 season from a year ago, which also included a perfect 8-0 mark in the WCC to win its eighth-straight WCC title. LQP-DB was second with a 7-1 record, followed by Melrose Area (6-2), Morris Area-WCA (4-4), MACCRAY, Benson-KMS, and Montevideo (all 3-5), Sauk Centre (2-6) and YME (0-8).
Members of this year’s Minnewaska Area varsity girls tennis team are senior Brianna Erickson; juniors Katie Sorenson, Megan Thorfinnson, Katy Vold, Avarie Uhde and McKenna Uhde; sophomores Addy Heid, Alia Randt and Olivia Danielson; and ninth-graders Rachel Rankin, Kaylen Blair, Norah VanZee, Kennedy Blair and Adysen Hess.
Waska 6, BKMS 1
The Lakers won their conference opener over Benson-KMS last Tuesday night, 6-1.
The Lakers swept the three doubles’ matches, but had a little harder time in singles as BKMS won at fourth singles and took the first singles match to three sets.
Alia Randt earned a hard-fought win at first singles (6-4, 4-6, 10-5 tiebreaker), while Megan Thorfinnson won easily at second singles (6-0, 6-3) and Rachel Rankin earned a quick win at third singles (6-1, 6-1).
In doubles, Olivia Danielson and Avarie Uhde gave up just two games in winning 6-1, 6-1 at first doubles, while Katy Vold and Katie Sorenson earned a 7-5, 6-2 victory at second doubles, and McKenna Uhde and Addy Heid picked up a sixth point for the Lakers with a 6-2, 6-3 win at third doubles.
Waska 5, Morris-WCA 2
The Lakers swept the four singles’ matches on the way to a 5-2 win at Morris Area/WCA, Thursday night. Alia Randt led the victory with a 6-1, 6-2 win at first singles, while Avarie Uhde won 6-3, 6-4 at second singles, Rachel Rankin shut out her opponent at third singles, 6-0, 6-0, and Addy Heid improved to 8-2 for the season with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at fourth singles.
Minnewaska also earned a point in doubles as Brianna Erickson and Katy Vold earned a close 6-7 (2-7), 7-5, 10-7 tiebreaker win at second doubles.
The other two doubles’ matches also went three sets, with Morris Area/CA pulling out victories for its two points.
