The Barsness Park Buckthorn Brigade has been working this fall on patches of buckthorn on the south side of Barsness Park. Volunteers have been girdling buckthorn trees and painting the girdled band with a herbicide. In one area near water a different method was used, trees were cut off at the 12” level and heavy duty plastic bags were zip tied to the stumps. This method deprives the stump of light and the ability to send shoots to seek light killing the root system. Very small trees less than 24” tall were uprooted. City crew members have also been applying herbicide to shoots that have come up after forest mulching. Pictured above are Buckthorn Brigade members Wayne Zimmerman, Dan Anderson, Roger Lasota, John R. Stone and David Thompson. Also helping last week were Gail Morris, Char Zimmerman and Karen Martinson.
