Gators top Holdingford and Montevideo

The Minnewaska Area/Morris Area Gators are peaking at the right time. The Gators won their third-straight meet with a 110-76 win at Montevideo, Thursday night.
The Gators, who improved to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the conference, were also set to compete at the true-team section meet, Saturday, but results of that competition will be highlighted next week. The Gators will now prepare for the WCC Meet at Montevideo, set for Friday, Oct. 27.
In the results that follow is also a recap of the team’s 54-48 win over Holdingford, Oct. 3.
Gators 54, Holding 48
The Gators earned a close 54-48 win at Holdingford, Tuesday, Oct. 3, picking up the clinching six points with a victory in the final event of the night, the 400 freestyle relay.
The Gators won 10 of the 12 events, including the final eight.
Earning victories were Melena Longtin in the 50 freestyle (26.16) and 100 freestyle (57.76); Mesa Kittelson in the 100 butterfly (1:10.01); Becca Femrite in the 200 freestyle (2:10.83) and 500 freestyle (6:02.42); Lyla Stadtherr in the 100 breaststroke (1:18.84); Soffia Stadtherr in the 100 backstroke (1:11.16); Clare Barnstuble in the diving competition (198.85 points); the 200 freestyle relay team of Soffia and Lyla Stadtherr, Isabel Guerra and Longtin (1:49.41) and in the final event of the night, the 400 yard freestyle relay team of Longtin, Femrite, Lyla Stadtherr and Soffia Stadtherr (4:04.41).
“It was a great night for the Gators,” coach Oellien said. “Because we were competing in their small pool, we needed to make the best selection for each event. Coming off a week break from competition, we brought our top performers and they did the job and came out with a win.
“The meet ended with the victory in the 400 free relay, which was very exciting. We made a lot of section times and I’m very proud of the results.”
• Winning titles for the JV team, which also was victorious, were Ella Larson in the 200 freestyle (2:32.32); Sarah Dougherty in the 50-yard butterfly (36.3); Grace Zenk in the 100 backstroke (1:30.78); and Sydney Gibson in the 100 breaststroke (1:32.976), while placing second were the 200 yard medley relay of Zenk, Gibson, Tommi Devick and Abbigail Peterson (2:37.96); Jillian Schott in the 200 freestyle (2:38.4); Yavonne Vanhorn in the 100 individual medley (1:25.58); Sadie Daniels in the 50 freestyle (32.4); the 200 freestyle relay team of Berdine Kleindl, Zenk, Phemie Oeltjen and Lorin Wilts (2:17.58); Vylet Frank in the 100 backstroke (1:35.13); and the 400 yard freestyle relay team of Kaia Anderson, Devick, Peterson and Gabby Schneider (5:17.46).
Gators 110, Monte 76
The Gators won 10 events during a 110-76 win at Montevideo, Thursday, including the final nine events.
Melena Longtin was part of four firsts, including the 50 freestyle (26.98) and 100 freestyle (59.85) races, while Becca Femrite had three titles, including wins in the 200 freestyle (2:14.53) and 500 freestyle (6:02.06) events, Lyla Stadtherr had three firsts, including a win in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.37) and Soffia Stadtherr also won three times, including the 100-yard backstroke (1:10.29).
Mesa Kittelson added a first in the 100 butterfly (1:09.4), Clare Barnstuble earned first (211.8 points) and Ella Roering was third (193.55) in the diving competition and the Gators also won the 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay.
Racing for the 200 freestyle relay team were Soffia and Lyla Stadtherr, Longtin and Isabel Guerra (1:48.75) and members of the winning 400 freestyle team were Longtin, Soffia and Lyla Stadtherr and Femrite (4:02.97).
