Girls tennis team sweeps Sauk Centre in 6A opener, 7-0

The Minnewaska Area girls tennis team won its first playoff match with a 7-0 sweep of Sauk Centre, Thursday night at home during the Section 6A quarterfinals.
The Lakers earned the third seed and had little problems with the sixth-seeded Mainstreeters, whom Minnewaska Area also beat in the regular-season finale nine days earlier.
Minnewaska, coached by Tara Reichmann, is now set to play second-seeded NLS, Tuesday (tomorrow) in the Section 6A Team Tourney “Final Four” at Rogers.
The winner of the section advances to the State Girls Tennis Tourney, set for Oct. 24-27 at Minneapolis.
The Section 6A Individual Tourney begins Wednesday, Oct. 11 at Rogers with preliminary-round action. The “Final Four” for the individual tourney is set for Tuesday, Oct. 17, also at Rogers.
Leading the way for the Lakers this season are Addy Heid (15-5 record), Rachel Rankin (15-5), Megan Thorfinnson (14-6), Alia Randt (14-6), Katy Vold (13-7), Katie Sorenson (13-8), Olivia Danielson (12-8) and Avarie Uhde (12-8).
Minnewaska Area, which is 12-6 overall, also won its ninth-straight WCC title this fall with a perfect 8-0 league record.
Waska 7, Sauk Centre 0
The Lakers had little problem getting past Sauk Centre during the Section 6A quarterfinals, Thursday, at home. Minnewaska won six of the matches in straight sets and also won in three sets at second doubles to earn the 7-0 sweep.
The win advanced the Lakers to the semifinals where they would face second-seeded NLS, which blanked BBE in another quarterfinal match, 7-0.
Alia Randt led the victory over Sauk Centre with a 6-2, 6-0 win at first singles, while Megan Thorfinnson won 6-0, 6-0 at second singles, Rachel Rankin was victorious by a 6-1, 6-0 score at third singles, and Addy Heidi also won by a shutout at fourth singles, 6-0, 6-0.
The matches were much closer in doubles as Olivia Danielson and Avarie Uhde won 6-3, 6-4 at first doubles, Katy Vold and Katie Sorenson earned a 4-6, 6-2, 10-5 tiebreaker win at second doubles, and Brianna Erickson and Kaylen Blair made it a 7-0 sweep with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 victory at third doubles.
