No home is complete without the presence of a child. No heart is lonely that is full of father and mother love. To watch the growth of a child and see it develop day by day is the greatest pleasure according to mortals. The pleasure has just fallen to the lot of Mr. and Mrs. A.R. Christensen who are rejoicing over the arrival of a bright baby boy at their home. The little fellow arrived Thursday morning of last week.

Invitations are out for the marriage of Lewis Herfindahl to Ida Swanberg, both prominent people of Lake Hazel. The wedding will take place on November 27.

100 YEARS AGO

From Oct. 19, 1923

Miss Olga Anderson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nels Anderson of Rolling Forks and John Evjen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Evjen of Langhei, were united in marriage on Saturday evening by Rev. Chr. Pederson. Miss Mabel Evjen and Mr. Norlin Anderson were their attendants. 

High school notes by Lester Friedman. Tuesday we had a fire drill, the building was emptied in fifty five seconds.

A pep meeting was called last Monday. Cora Tollefson was elected cheerleader by a large majority. The students are learning several songs and yells to help cheer the football team to victory. They will play Osakis next Saturday for their first appearance on the local field.

The Mimers Y.P.S. will meet Sunday evening in the schoolhouse. The following program will be given: reading, Edythe Dahlgren; piano solo, Mabel Arneson, Tronjemmer Skrone, Magnus Troen; vocal solo, Selma Ranum; reading, Ruth Lee. 

A.G. Fossen suffered a fracture of two ribs last Sunday evening when his car crashed into John Frederickson’s Ford on Highway 38 near the tourist camping grounds.

90 YEARS AGO

Funeral services for Raffel C. Swenson, were held at the Indherred church last Tuesday. Rev. G.O. Forde officiating. He is survived by his wife, Nikoli, and by six daughters and one son. They are Marie (Mrs. Martin Tolstad) ; Sannah (Mrs. Carl Livdahl); Ragna, (Mrs. Moen); Charlotte (Mrs. Arthur Dagne); Pearly (Mrs. Carl Gunvaldson); Aaget (Mrs. A. Lauler); and Eugene Swenson.

A Lutefisk supper with all the trimmings will be held at the Barsness church Nov. 3. Price will be 25¢ per plate.

School notes: Grades 7 and 8: The following pupils have perfect attendance records for the first six weeks: Pearl Eidberg, Eunice Erickson, Pearl Erickson, Alphield Forbord, Norman Hagen; Doris Berg, Marguerite Bredeson, Clarice Elie, Edna Engen, Ellen Erickson, Marvin Hagen, Luverne Hanson, John Merrill, Brenren Myking, David Wollan. 

The following pupils are on the honor roll; Seniors: Ruby Hanson, Ivend Holen, Clara Voight. Juniors: Margaret Larson, Florence Pederson. Sophomores: Esther Amundson, Carol Anderson. Freshman: Carl Larson, Margaret Ramstad and Jeneva Skoglund. 

Residents of Starbuck and Pope County will be able to get blanks from L.G. Solhaug, clerk of court, after Nov. 1. While automobile drivers will not be required to show their licenses until after next March 1, the highway department will issue 1,000,000 to 1,500,000 before that date. Each member of the family over 15 years of age receives an individual license for the one fee of 35¢.

80 YEARS AGO

From Oct. 28, 1943

Miss Inga Swenson, niece of Mr. and Mrs. Knut Braaten became the bride of Telford Jergenson, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Ole Jergenson at the Rolling Forks Lutheran Church on Oct. 14. The couple will make their home on a farm which he has rented in Rolling Forks. 

Miss Violet Schluter of Glenwood and Melvin Edmunds were married Friday evening at the Lutheran parsonage in Glenwood in the presence of Norman Edmunds and Blanche Schluter. 

Report from District No. 90: our school opened Sept. 7th. The enrollment was then 18. October 6.  JoAnne and Shirley Jackson entered out school making the enrollment 20. On the last day of the first period, Gail and Colleen Smedstad left so our enrollment is back to 18. Two of our pupils are from District 73 as that school is closed this year. We are preparing for our annual program which we hope many of you will attend. Ruthe Rosten, teacher. 

Miss Emma Aaberg is at the hospital receiving medical attention for burns about the knees and legs after a boiler of hot water spilled on her while she was helping Mrs. Tolstad with washing clothes.

Rev. Oscar Rem has officially resigned as pastor of Fron Lutheran Church effective January 18. He has accepted a call in a larger town, a larger church and a larger salary at Humboldt, Iowa. 

Joyce Walters, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Walters was crowned Homecoming Queen at Starbuck High School Homecoming festivities this week. Attendants to the queen were Margaret Aslakson, Luanne Peterson and LuVerne Suckow.

An 8 lb. 2 oz. baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Johnshoy last Wednesday at the Minnewaska Hospital. 

Mr. and Mrs. Luverne Flaten had their infant son, Duane Robert, baptized Sunday by Rev. Rem. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Vinge. 

Herman Carlson, who has been the Red Owl store manager at Worthington, recently moved to Hopkins, where he will be district supervisor.

Lowell Knutson, former mayor of Benson, left Saturday for New Ulm where he will be associated with the Red Owl store in that city. Mrs. Knutson, Tommy and Patty Lou, left Saturday for New Ulm to make their home. 

The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert DuBois, Jane Suzanne, was baptized Sunday, Oct. 11 at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Carsten Gorder, Eunice Erickson and Henrick Sylvester.

Sharon Diane Wilkening of Wood Lake and James Sylvan Opheim, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sylvan Opheim of Starbuck were married at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Wood Lake August 31. The couple will make their home in Minneapolis.

Births: a son, Donald Joseph to Mr. and Mrs. Homer Overstad of Coon Rapids October 16; a son to Mr. and Mrs. Donald Bones (Mary Ann Thompson) of Downey, CA October 4; a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Frank October 19; a son, Michael Scott to Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Femrite (Susan Heegard) of Minneapolis October 14. 

Cynthia Kay, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Lundebrek was baptized at Pilgrim Congregational Church of Benson Sunday, October 6. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Dan Wildeboer.

Army Private Lowell C. Sanvik, son of Mrs. Selma Sanvik of Starbuck is scheduled to complete 8 weeks of advanced infantry training with heavy weapons under the Reserved Force Act program at Fort Polk, LA. He is a 1963 graduate of Starbuck High School.

From Oct. 25, 1973

Sue Landmark, daughter of Mrs. Lu Landmark has been chose as a student advisor at Moorhead State College. This program is a supplement to the faculty advising and counseling services. 

The ladies of the Minnewaska Hospital and Home Auxiliaries have joined forces to start and operate a “Thrift Shoppe” which will be located in the former Starbuck Cleaners Building. Already hundreds of items have been brought in, sorted and marked for sale. 

A complete change has been announced in voting procedures which will apply to the entire state of Minnesota. Minnesota State Law, chapter 676 which was passed by the 1973 legislature now requires that all voters be properly registered.

Funeral services for Christie Marie Brevig, 88, were held from the Immanuel Lutheran Church Oct. 22. She is survived by four children: Kenneth and Erling of Starbuck, Ralph of Bismark, ND and Mrs. Ray (Sylvia) Brown of Starbuck. 

Kimberly Ann Hoermann of Dumont and Michael Syverson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Syverson were married June 4th at the St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Dumont. The couple will make their home in Havre, Montana. 

Starbuck native Irvin E. Aal joined International Harvester’s Agricultural Equipment group recently as senior vice president in charge of product management, engineering, marketing and sales. 

Jane Laberdee of Redwood Falls and Keith Nygaard, son of Allan Nygaard, were married August 27 at the Indherred Lutheran Church. The couple will make their home in rural Starbuck.

Funeral services for Eugene Dahlquist, 94, were held at Minnewaska Lutheran Church October 8. He is survived by his wife, Olive of Starbuck and one son, Leighton of South Haven. 

Sara Joyce Nieman of Oakdale and James David Syverson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Syverson of Starbuck were married June 19 at Cottage Grove United Church of Christ. The couple will make their home in Plano, Texas. 

The Starbuck Area Chamber of Commerce held an informal ribbon cutting ceremony at the Hair Studio, owned by Mary Lida, last week. The Hair Studio was recently re-located in the former State Farm Insurance building.

If only the Starbuck Pride Program wasn’t over because the Card Room just underwent a makeover. Those who frequent the Starbuck Card Room decided it was time to make some improvements, especially after the awning was knocked slightly off during the wind storm in July. 

The Starbuck Area Chamber of Commerce met on Oct. 20 and received an update on the new map. The map has been in the works for several months and several deadlines have passed with no map, however, at the meeting the board was able to view a copy of  an almost completed map. 

The Friends of Glacial Lakes State Park held its annual meeting on Oct. 14 and received a visit from State Representative Bud Heidgerken. Heidgerken said he visited the park and feels it is in excellent shape and is far ahead of other parks in the area.

Kruger Farms of Starbuck was honored last Wednesday as the recipient of the annual award presented during the Pope County Salute to Business and Industry luncheon at the Minnewaska House. The annual event has been honoring Pope County businesses since 1994. 

Members of the Minnewaska Area Schools Board of Education came to last week’s regular board meeting early to get training on Microsoft surface tablets. Board members were trained in the operation of the tablets by Steve Sampson of the district’s information technology staff. 

A local food program created to make fresh fruits and vegetables more affordable to Minnesota families will be distributing Holiday Packs for $30 at Shalom Community Lutheran Church Ministry Center in Starbuck on Saturday, November 16th. This month they will be highlighting their Holiday Pack which includes an 8-10 pound turkey, 5 pounds potatoes, onions, carrots, stuffing, cranberries, canned yams, gravy and pumpkin pie for $30.
