The Minnewaska Area wrestling team picked up another conference win last week, beating Morris Area-CA-Hancock in a dual match at home last Tuesday, 45-25.

The Lakers improved to 3-2 in the conference and 3-4 overall with the latest victory.

In the results that follow is also a recap of the Thief River Falls Invitational from Saturday, Jan. 20.  At the meet, Miles Wildman and Chase Smith placed first for the Lakers, while Landon Schiffler and Isaiah Rosario earned thirds.

This week, the Lakers are very busy with the NLS triangular, Tuesday (tomorrow), the Paynesville triangular, Friday, and the WCC Meet at Dawson-Boyd, Saturday, Feb. 3.

Also coming up is the Section 8A Team Tourney, set for Feb. 15-16 at various sites.

The Lakers currently have six wrestlers with double-digit wins — Landon Schiffler (18-7), Miles Wildman (19-2), Chase Smith (18-7), Isaiah Rosario (12-8), Braylen Scharmer (11-11) and Myles Reichmann (13-11).

Thief River Falls Invitational

The Lakers placed fifth of 15 teams at the Thief River Falls “Prowler” Invitational last Saturday at TRF.

It was a three-team battle for the team title as Thief River Falls won the title with 163.5 points, followed closely by Bertha-Hewitt-Verndale-PP with 162.5 points and United North Central in third with 157.5 points.

Minnewaska, which did not have wrestlers at four weight classes, earned fifth with 112.5 points.  The Lakers were led by individual titles by Miles Wildman at 114 pounds and Chase Smith at 127.

Wildman won his title with three pins, raising his record to 18-2 in the process, while Smith earned a technical fall, pin and 3-2 decision in the finals over a wrestler from United North Central that was 23-6.  Smith improved to 17-7 for the season with his three victories.

Placing third for the Lakers were Landon Schiffler at 107 pounds and Isaiah Rosario at 139.  Both went 3-1.

Schiffler (18-6 record) lost in the first round, but came back with three-straight wins to place third, while Rosario also lost his opener before coming back to earn third with three falls, including a pin in the first period over the wrestler who beat in him in the opener.  Rosario improved to 12-7 for the season. 

The Lakers also had five wrestlers who placed sixth; Braylen Scharmer at 152 pounds, Jayce Kovarik at 160, Myles Reichmann at 172, Riley Dell at 189 and Eric Bowen at 215 pounds, while Cole Kittelson added an eighth-place finish at 172 pounds.

Waska 45, MAHACA 25

The Lakers won eight of the 13 matches during a 45-25 conference win over MAHACA last Tuesday night at home.  The match featured eight pins and two forfeits, including six pins for the Lakers.

Alex Adams opened up the match with a pin in 1:36 and, after a loss at 114 pounds, Miles Wildman (33 seconds) and Chase Smith (45 seconds) made quick work of their opponents with falls, giving Minnewaska an early 18-6 lead.

The Tigers earned three-straight wins to take a temporary 19-18 lead before Braylen Scharmer gave the Lakers the lead for good with a pin in 1:32 at 152 pounds.

Jack Payne earned a forfeit win at 160 pounds and Jayce Kovarik won by a pin in 1:05 at 172 pounds to put the Lakers up 36-19.

Myles Reichmann clinched the victory for Minnewaska with a 3-2 win at 189 pounds and Riley Dell put a stamp of dominance on the match with another pin for the Lakers at 215 pounds in 35 seconds.
