The Minnewaska Area girls basketball team improved to 13-5 overall with two wins and a loss last week.  The Lakers opened up last week’s action with a 48-30 loss at Osakis last Tuesday night before coming back to win at home against Litchfield, Thursday (71-36) and at BOLD, Saturday (42-38).

The Lakers, who are also 6-1 in the WCC, have three more games scheduled this week, including a game at Montevideo, Tuesday (tomorrow), a game at home against league-leading Sauk Centre, Thursday, and a contest at Redwood Valley, Saturday.

Osakis 48, Minnewaska 30

The Lakers had a six-game winning streak snapped with a 48-30 loss at Osakis last Tuesday night.  It was possibly the worst shooting night of the season for the Lakers, who shot just 19 percent from the field (10-for-51), including one-of-23 from three-point range and 50 percent from the line (9-of-18).

Minnewaska, which dropped to 11-5 overall, trailed 30-19 at halftime and added just 11 more points in the second half while the victors scored 18 more.  It was the season-low in points for the Lakers, whose previous lows were 45 and 47 points.

Addy Kath led the Lakers with eight points, 10 rebounds and two steals, while Sydney Dahl added seven points, two blocked shots and five boards and Megan Thorfinnson chipped in with five points and two rebounds.

It was a complete reversal for Minnewaska, which had averaged over 64 points in its previous four games.

Lauryn Ankeny had four points, three blocked shots and five rebounds for the Lakers, while Olivia Danielson had three points and two steals, Fier had two points, Jayda Kolstoe had one point, three boards and two steals, and Alia Randt had three rebounds and three steals.

Waska 71, Litchfield 36

The Lakers earned a 71-36 non-conference win at home against Litchfield, Thursday, outscoring the Dragons 37-16 in the second half after also dominating the first half.

Minnewaska led early 12-0, 17-4 and 26-7, but Litchfield climbed back to within 34-20 by halftime.  The Lakers quickly put any doubts to rest by coming out hot in the second half to get the lead up past 20 points and the rout was on.

Sydney Dahl had 17 points, four rebounds, four assists and five steals for one of her best games of the season, while Avery Fier had 12 points and seven boards, Lauryn Ankeny another steady game of 12 points, two assists and four steals, and Megan Thorfinnson added 10 points, hitting 3-of-6 on three-pointers.

The Lakers were 24-of-56 overall on field goals, but were especially hot from long range, hitting 13 of 27 for 39 of their 71 points.  Minnewaska Area also had advantages of 28-10 in turnovers and 18-4 in steals.

Alia Randt had a pair of 3-pointers on the way to eight points and four assists, while Kendal Danielson had four points, Carly Jergenson had three, Olivia Danielson had two points, five boards and three assists, Addy Kath also scored two points along with four assists, and Jayda Kolstoe had one point.

The Dragons shot 26 percent from the field, but stayed in the game due to five made 3-pointers and a 38-27 rebounding edge.  Litchfield was led in scoring by Isla Dille, who scored 10 points, while Emma Knudsen added seven points and nine boards.

Waska 42, BOLD 38

The Lakers survived a tough test at BOLD, Friday, scoring just 42 points but still pulling off a 42-38 victory over a determined Warrior team.

The Lakers turned the ball over 22 times and went just 2-of-3 from the line, while BOLD went to the line 18 times (making only six) and recorded 12 steals.

Lauryn Ankeny was the only Laker to score in double figures as she had 14 points, five rebounds and six steals.  Avery Fier added six points and three boards, while Olivia Danielson had five points and four rebounds and Megan Thorfinnson scored five points while dishing out three assists.

The Lakers led 22-21 at halftime before holding BOLD to 17 second-half points.  During an earlier meeting this year, the Lakers won 64-39.

Also scoring for Minnewaska Area were Sydney Dahl with four points and four rebounds, Alia Randt and Addy Kath with three points each (Kath also had a team-high seven rebounds) and Jayda Kolstoe with two points and three boards.
