From Jan. 18, 1924

Miss Myrtle Davidson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.V. Davidson of Rolling Forks, and Mr. Alvin Boe, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Nils Boe, were married by the Justice of the Peace, Frank Reed, at Glenwood on January 9. Their attendants were Ruby Davidson, Selma Davidson, Clarence and Oscar Davidson. 

A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ingvold Brenden on Wednesday. 

A baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Albert Dokken on Jan. 11. 

John Overson, John Larson and Edner Rolien have formed a partnership to sell Westinghouse radios. The radio is the coming thing and it won’t be long before there will be a radio in every home. They are selling sets in all signs, from one to six tubes.

The White Bear Lake Farmers Club met at the Martin Aune home Wednesday afternoon. The program consisted of a talk by Rev. M. Casper Johnshoy, a recitation by Mariet Nordaune. The following new officers were elected: George Strandness, president; Ottar Flak, secretary; Astrid Flak and Carl Brors, program committee; Mrs. Martin Aune and Mrs. Milo Tessem, refreshment committee.

From Jan. 18, 1934

The Starbuck Community Band and the Starbuck Male Quartet have been invited to appear at the annual meeting of the Land O’ Lakes Creameries in Minneapolis the first part of March. All expenses of the trip will be paid by Land O’ Lakes. 

The C.W.A. payroll in Pope County reached a total of $45,731 and one cent when the checks for last week had been handed out. There were 447 men on the payroll at that time. Frank Shepard, county manager of the C.W.A., said yesterday that he had been authorized to rotate farmers on the C.W.A. Any farmer may be replaced after earning $50, the only exception is that no man can be replaced when it would result in his being immediately placed on the relief roll. 

Funeral services were held for Mrs. John Ingvarson at  the Minnewaska Church on Jan. 14, Rev. O.C. Dahlager officiating. She is survived by her husband, one daughter Jeanette and the following brothers and sisters: Thea Solhaug, Louis Solhaug, Dr. S.B. Solhaug, and her mother Mrs. Carrie Solhaug.

The Starbuck Vikings added another hockey victory Sunday when they traveled to Appleton and defeated the Millers 6 to 1. Cornie Pederson scored twice in the first period, “Shorty” Aaberg scored twice in the third period. Carlton Brevig made several sensational stops, defending the Viking net. 

80 YEARS AGO

From Jan. 20, 1944

Fifteen-year-old Gerald Bylund of Holmes City is recovering nicely at the Minnewaska Hospital after Dr. B.A. McIver of Lowry made a successful appeal for a sufficient amount of the new drug, penicillin, to administer to him. The boy was suffering from a serious blood stream infection which caused pus to gather in all his joints. Dr. McIver wrote to Dr. Kiefer in Boston who wired his laboratory in Chicago to supply Dr. McIver. 

Mr. and Mrs. Oley Espelien are the parents of a baby boy born January 8. 

Mrs. Daniel Gaunthun has been appointed civilian recruiting officer of the WAC.

Luther Calmer Nelson has completed the course of training in the Aviation Radioman School at Naval Air Technical Training Center, Memphis, TN. Luther was born in Kensington on October 10, 1923. His mother died while he was an infant and he came to live at the home of his aunt, Mrs. Oscar Wesen. He graduated from Starbuck High School and attended St. Olaf College.

Lt. Commander A.F. Giesen arrived home Saturday noon. He has been so busy getting acquainted with his family, that he has scarcely been seen on the village streets. 

70 YEARS AGO

From Jan. 21, 1954

Coffee went up to 10¢ in all restaurants in Starbuck on Monday. With coffee costing more than $1.00 a pound, it was impossible to serve good coffee and come out even at 5¢ per cup. 

J.E. Evans, who completed 40 years of service with Northern Pacific Railway Co. last November, retired as depot agent in Fairfax January 16. Jerald Aulick of St. Paul assumed his duties here Monday as depot agent. 

Mr. and Mrs. Herman Tonak of Morgan purchased the Coffee Shop and building from Luverne Barsness this week and took possession on Monday. Mrs. Tonak is a sister of Mrs. H.W. Meyer of rural Starbuck. 

Funeral services for Mrs. Olava Sundheim, 82, were held at West Zion Lutheran Church Jan. 12. She is survived by four children: Edwin, Emil, Melvin and Mrs. Olaus (Esther) Lien. 

Patty Dullum celebrated her 12th birthday January 6 when relatives and friends visited at the Perry Dullum home.

Charles R. Wahlquist, who has been engaged in general practice of law in Starbuck since Oct. 1, 1963, has taken over the law practice of the late William Merrill. He and his wife, Joyce, and one-year-old son, Chipper, reside in Starbuck. 

Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Opdahl entertained dinner guests Sunday in honor of their daughter, Elaine, on her 15th birthday. 

Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Branch of Minneapolis are the parents of their 4th son, Dale Scott, born Thursday, Jan. 9. 

Miss Phyllis Diane Hedlund, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Hedlund of Glenwood and LeRoy Earl Sorensen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Sorensen of Starbuck, were married at the Glenwood Lutheran Church on Sunday, Jan. 12. The couple will make their home in Minneapolis. 

50 YEARS AGO

From Jan. 17, 1974

Melvin Heggestad was reelected as chairman of the board of Commissioners. 

Cornie Pederson, owner of Starbuck Oil Co., has been hospitalized at Northwestern hospital in Minneapolis the past couple of weeks and still is in serious condition. A call from Mrs. Pederson Monday morning revealed that he had been removed from intensive care and was improving.

Local firemen answer 28 alarms during 1973. Six of the calls were within the city limits and twenty-two were rural calls. 

Mr. and Mrs. Harold Andert announce the engagement of their daughter, Doris Ann to Ronald Allen Engebretson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Engebretson of rural Starbuck. No date has been set for the wedding. 

New mail carrier for Starbuck is Emry Anderson, who began his duties here on January 5th. The past sixteen years he was a rural mail carrier at LaBolt, SD and has taken over the former Marvin Nelson route. They are currently renting the Peter Kleven home in southwest Starbuck. They have three children, all married. 

The Luther College Concert Band will perform the music of eminent composers in it’s appearance at Glenwood High School auditorium on Thursday, Jan. 31st at 8 p.m. The band directed by Frederick Nyline, is scheduled for this one performance in Glenwood during it’s 1973 tour, according to Wayne Fuller, chairman of the local committee on arrangements. 

Did you hear about the Norwegian who always backed off the bus? He heard someone was going to grab his seat.

Joshua James Razink, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Razink of Clontarf was the New Year’s baby born at the Minnewaska District Hospital Jan. 12. 

Miss Julie Espelien, daughter of Orla Espelien and John Nygren of Vadnais Heights were married at West Zion Lutheran Church Oct. 3. The couple will make their home in Lake Elmo. 

Ken Spore, son of Jim and Caren Spore of Starbuck is a candidate for Sno-King and is sponsored by the Parts Department at Wilmar AVTI.

Funeral services for Tina Johnshoy, 84, were held at the Fron Lutheran Church on January 9. She is survived by three sons, Herbert and Thorwald of Starbuck and Harold of Cologne, MN and one daughter, Mrs. Elmer (Olivia) Hildestad of Richfield.

Mark Billehus and Thomas Johnshoy of Starbuck were named to the Director’s list at Willmar Area Vocational Technical Institute for the winter quarter.

Dolores Berg was recently honored by the Cyrus Board of Education for her retirement after 18 years as a school bus driver. 

Funeral services for George Femrite, Sr., 95, were held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lowry January 18. He is survived by two sons, George and Gurvin of Lowry and one daughter, Annette (Mrs. John) Kan of Chicago, IL. 

Lyn Sabolik announced last week the change of ownership of Lyn’s Cafe to new owners Shane and Jessi Gebhardt. 

January Students of the Month at the Starbuck Elementary were Kari Larson, Katie Staples, Vanessa Pooch, Derek McIver, John Shirkey, Amber Aaberg, Patrick Killacky, Jordan Lehtola, Taya Staples, Darrick Anderson, Crystal Foslien, Anne Brown, Brooke Nelson, Jenna Johnshoy and Summer Waters. 

20 YEARS AGO

It appears that negotiations between Dr. Robert Bösl   and the Minnewaska Regional Health System (MRHS) are over. Both MRHS Administrator Tom Theroult and Dr. Bösl told the Starbuck Times this week that no negotiations are taking place and that has also been confirmed by a letter to Dr. Bösl signed by 13 MRHS directors that the district will no longer pursue a contract. 

“It’s been a blessing to us,” said Theresa Fisher as she and her husband Todd bid the restaurant business good-bye on Thursday, January 15, 2004.  After almost 4 years of ownership, the Fisher’s sold Nodland’s Cafe on Main Street in Starbuck, to Todd and Colleen Sheldon of Glenwood. 

In what state did Orville and Wilbur Wright fly their first flight? Sixth grader Kelli Kalina’s answer (North Carolina) made her champion of the Starbuck Elementary School National Geography Bee. She is the daughter of Neal and Melanie Kalina of Lowry.

John Clausen of Sedan has been working on cars for 30 years. Whether working on collision repairs or working on street rods, it’s just something he has always done. His 1941 Willy’zs Coupe called Screamin’ Cool was selected out of thousands of entries to be in Snap-on Tech Toys® 2014 edition wall calendar. 

Nelson Lundebrek of Lowry was selected as a Minnesota Youth Beef Experience Program (MYBEP) heifer recipient. Lundebrek received an Angus Heifer sponsored by Mitteness Family Angus – Randy, Karen, Ryan and Mark Mitteness of Benson – of the Minnesota Angus association. 

The Starbuck City Council approved a motion to contact Attorney Tom Jacobson and have him begin work to discontinue the city’s relationship with PeopleService. PeopleService is the company currently operating the city water and wastewater plants.
