Scout Fishing Derby held 

Feb. 6, 1964 – Oliver Hafstad, a Chippewa Falls Township farmer, was to be honored as the county’s Star Farmer by the Soil and Water Conservation District. Making the presentation would be LeRoy Knutson, a supervisor who also farmed in Chippewa Falls. 

The Minnesota Highway Department announced plans to rebuild and reroute Minnesota Hwy. No. 28 east through the city of Glenwood. 

A grand opening was set for the Sears store in downtown Glenwood. Authorized merchants for the store were Dale and Esther Walker. The store operated out of a location in the Fremad Building. 

George Zemke had sold his jobbing business, T and Z Jobbing, to Henry Candy Co. of Morris. He and his partner, Tack Thayer, had begun operating the business in 1947. They sold confections and tobacco items.  

Corlyce Phelps, Miss Glenwood Waterama, was visiting the St. Paul Winter Carnival. 

Feb. 7, 1974 – The season’s first snowstorm snarled the area with more than 4 inches of snow and high winds. Schools dismissed early and opened late the next day. A thermometer reading of 25 below was reported. 

Dr. James Reinhardt was due to arrive in Glenwood to practice medicine with the Glenwood Clinic. 

Named to the A Honor Roll at Glenwood High School were 12th-graders Kathy Beecher, James Bennett, Rebecca Bennett, Beth Bowen, Kathy Bryce, Theresa Caskey, Shelly Colby, Sherry Dahlseng, Debra Domke, Gary Dvorsak, Harley Hanson, Baubette Holtberg, Keith Kerfeld, Greg McIver, Gary Paulson, Debra Swanson and Diane Weispfenning. Seventh-graders on the A Honor Roll were Diane Bryce, Kathleen Cagley, Jane Dero, Tom Hegna, Scott Nemmers, Mark Steinkoegler and Kevin Wagner. 

Feb. 2, 1984 – A large number of farmers than had been anticipated signed up to participate in the dairy PIK (Payment in Kind) program. ASCS Director Richard Oeltjen said that over 80 farmers had decided to participate in the program, which paid farmers to reduce production by paying them $10 per hundred weight of milk they didn’t produce. 

Area athletes were rated highly in state polls. The Starbuck girls’ basketball team was said to be third in the state in Class A polls. The West Central Tribune said Starbuck was second and Brooten sixth. The Bucks were working on a 12-0 record, and Cindy Vatthauer was on her way to becoming a member of the 1,000-point club. 

One of the original goals of the Youth Services Bureau was to reduce the number of juveniles going through the court system. In 1978, the year before the program began, there were 98 petitions filed; in 1983 there had been 28. 

Feb. 7, 1994 – The Glenwood Municipal Airport would possibly be getting a new look. In addition to the 1,000-foot extension to the runway, which would be completed in the spring, a new hangar and an arrival/departure building were planned. 

The 31st annual Scout Fishing Derby had taken place on the previous Saturday and Sunday. Scouts took to the ice to fish for both fish and savings bonds which were used as prizes. In addition, Scouts also had chances to win many door prizes. Twelve brave members and leaders of High Adventure Explorer Post No. 4 from the St. Cloud area had built a structure to spend the night in on the ice Saturday night. 

Laker Dan Guggisberg had taken home the only first-place finish for Minnewaska Area High School during the Pheasant Conference wrestling tournament in Alberta. Guggisberg, who was 21-1 for the season, was 3-0 in the tournament with all the wins coming by fall. 

Feb. 2, 2004 – Yet another twist had been added to the Lakeside Ballroom issue. Representatives from D & W Construction of Garfield presented the Glenwood City Commission with a plan to build a ballroom that they said would cost about $1.8 million. The building design was significantly larger than the most recent presented by Widseth, Smith, Nolting and Associates. The dilemma faced by the commission was to determine which building design would be the best value and the most affordable to the city.

There was a slow but steady decline in the number of fish houses on Pope County lakes. That was according to the counts made by the Department of Natural Resources, which showed that over the last four years, the numbers had dropped each year.  

Glenwood scouts were getting ready for the 41st annual Scout Fishing Derby on Lake Minnewaska, Feb. 7-8. Scouts throughout the Midwest were expected attend and both outdoor and indoor activities were planned, such as fishing and snow sculpting, pine wood derby racing and swimming at Minnewaska Area High School. 

Feb. 3, 2014 – Glacial Hills Elementary School (GHES) Director Deb Mathias informed the GHES board at its regular meeting last week that it should start thinking about hiring a business manager to replace Dana Kennedy, whose family has moved to Perham. Kennedy is still commuting part time to GHES and is willing to stay on as long as needed, it was stated. Board member Kaley Poegel said it is a good idea to advertise and see what interest there is in the position. 

The State Emergency Operations Center (SECO) has established a public hotline for Minnesotans with propane issues or questions. The hotline will operate Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Minnesota residents with questions about the current propane situation or who are in danger of running out of heating fuel can call the hotline. 

The icy lash of winter weather has taken a toll on school schedules statewide. As of last Tuesday’s school board meeting, Minnewaska Area Schools had racked up four closings and two late starts.
