It’s been record-breaking warm winter.  

And now, this spring is breaking records.  

Lake Minnewaska was officially ice free on Wednesday, March 13, making this the earliest ice-out date since records began in 1906. 

The earliest ice-out date was on March 21, 2012, meaning this year’s date is eight days earlier.

The unusually warm winter with lack of snowfall meant that the lake’s ice was never uniform  enough during the normal winter months to support full vehicles or large permanent fish houses.  Add to that, a couple of weeks of abnormally high temperatures at the end of February and into March, where temperatures even reached the 70s a few times.  

Because Lake Minnewaska was ice free by March 13, it easily set a new record for early ice out.  In 118 years of recording ice-out dates for Minnewaska, ice out has come in March only 9 times.  Typically, ice out is in April some time.  There have been only two years in that span when the ice out was in May.  One of those years, 2013, set the record for latest ice out on May 11.

The lake was about 98 percent ice free on March 12 following warm weekend and temperatures in the 70s on Monday.  There remained a few stubborn sheets of ice on the lake during the day last Tuesday, but all but a small area near Minnewaska Area High School was gone by early evening.  By Wednesday morning, March 13, the entire lake was open.
