Winter storm brings nearly 10 inches of snow

April 30, 1964 – Glenwood Jaycees were preparing for their slave auction, involving many Jaycee members and area businessmen. Expected to be sold on the auction block were Dick Gandrud, Don Callen, Gordy Jacobson, Dwayne Peterson, Jim Lepper, Bill Noyes, Don Ostrander, Ray Gulsvig, Dareld Hirschey, Mickey Olson and Dick Kaus.

Twenty-three musical groups or soloists from Glenwood High School were about to enter the state-regional context competition. Among the entrants were Gwen Doebbert, Christine Flom, Barbara Gandrud, Marjorie Christenson, Susan Knutson, Peggy Ogdahl, Cathy Forbes, Kristin Kinney, Elaine Skilbred, Janis Hustad, Ruth Gilbertson, Norman Rindahl, Ken Kuhns, Adele Swenson, Jacqueline Hanson, Luiana Sievert, Lindy Hedlund, Cheryl Barsness, Curtis Schuad, Judy Jacobs, Patty Bogie, Barbara Kuhns, Jeanne Carlson and Susan Sharp. 

The Villard Mallards were busy playing baseball in the Little Eight Conference. On the Villard team were Rick Rosenfield, Rich Adolphsen, Steve Elliott, Dave Fischer, Bob Jacobs, Bob Albers, Mclaren Pennie and Gary Kirckof.  

May 2, 1974 – Twenty-three Glenwood entries were to compete in state region-competition as musical soloists or groups. Among the students were Jackie Varner, Jane Kinney, Erick Gandrud, Steve Mikkelson, Deb Pearson, Julie Hanson, Peggy Schumacher, Cindy Varner, Kim Keacher, Louise Nyhammer, Brent Cochran, Ann Kinney, Mike Rippe, Pat Lund, Karen Ewing, Luanne Schumacher, Amber Olson, Brenda Anderson, Gary Paulson, Brian Paulson, Cindy Ostrander, Peggy Brenden, Kathy Beecher, Kay Hagen, Kathy Bartos, Bed Domke, Paula Hough, Beth Bullock, Pay Noyes, Connie Weber, Mota Hausken, Tammy Soderholm, Jean Christman, Jon  Bergman, Les LaCroix, Lila Mattson, Marie Jorgenson, Patty Robinson, Laura Doughty, Mark Schumacher and Steve Peterson. 

Les LaCroix had just been named a member of the All-State Choir for the second year in a row. 

Jeff Walker was named Villard’s Scholar Athlete at the annual sports banquet. 

May 3, 1984 – The accounting firm which provided the annual audit for the city of Glenwood told the city fathers that the city should get its unappropriated cash balance up to help carry itself through the time between tax settlements and state appropriations. 

Workers were said to be ahead of schedule on the construction of units which were to become part of Glenwood Plaza, the independent living portion of Glenwood Retirement Home. The nursing home had sold its first six units and completed them two years ahead of planned schedule and construction was beginning on the second circle of units. 

Director Lee Paulson and his cast from Glenwood High School were working on a comedy for the spring plays. Students involved included Kim Noyes, Ed Springman, Kris Schwerin, Rob Weisel, Joel Muehlberg, Steve Troen, Nancy Hovren, Amy Brogla, Tim Rippe, Eric Jore and Kris Bergman. 

May 2, 1994 – A winter snowstorm complete with nearly 10 inches of snow had struck Pope County. Minnewaska Area Schools had to start two hours late because of the snow, which was one of the latest snow-delayed days anyone could remember.

The Glenwood City Commission had approved the special use permit for a 48’x90’ addition to an existing building for Dairyland Healthcare Solutions, which had been converted from garage to office space. The new addition would  be used as a garage, storage and shipping area for equipment. 

Villard Elementary School had adopted the slogan, “A Little School with a Big Heart,” and was in search of a logo. The Villard staff was to judge all entries and choose a logo to represent the school. The logo and slogan would be used on the school’s stationery, sweatshirts and T-shirts.

April 26, 2004 – Minnewaska Area High school drama students performed the three-act play Harvey, in the school auditorium. The comedy was the story of Elwood P. Dowd (played by Josh Ekstrand) who had an imaginary friend, Harvey, a six-foot-tall rabbit. The play followed the adventures and misadventures of Dowd as he introduced Harvey to his sister’s friends and townspeople. 

The military trash was now Pope County’s treasure. During Wednesday’s Pope County commissioners meeting, the board unanimously authorized the purchase of a 1990 22-foot Boston Whaler boat for $3,219. Pope County Sheriff Tom Larson said the former Navy-owned watercraft would be used for the county boat and water safety program. 

April 28, 2014 – Representatives of the Klick Foundation met with the Pope County Fair Board last Monday and proposed an option that could allow for expansion, long-term planning and the redevelopment of the Pope County Fairgrounds. The Pope County Ag Society has received grant money to improve the fairgrounds, but that money fell short of the vision and goals of the expansion project. 

Stacy Gerdes, current owner of The Hatchery Bar and Grill in Lowry, along with business partner Ken Moe, last week agreed to purchase Torgy’s on the Lake from longtime owner Marlin Torguson. Gerdes said last week that he hopes to have the restaurant and bar open by June. 

While the anglers got a jump on fishing on Lake Minnewaska last Thursday evening, there was still a sizable sheet of ice still covering the south side of the Lake on the Glenwood side. While the lake was nearly 90 percent ice-free on Friday, it wasn’t completely ice-free until Saturday morning on April 26.
