Two ordinances were passed, and one was repealed at last week’s meeting of the Pope County Board of Commissioners. The two ordinances regulate public use of cannabis and offer direction in dealing with dangerous, at large and nuisance animals. The repealed ordinance was a housekeeping item that was used in the past for public health that no longer applies now that Horizon Public Health has taken the helm.

The ordinance dealing with cannabis prohibits use of cannabis in public spaces and addresses minor use of the substance. Actions for these prohibited uses will go along state statute regarding discipline, it was stated. According to Pope County Administrator Kersten Kappmeyer, the ordinance covers use in the county’s cities if those cities don’t have their own regulations in place.

The newly enacted ordinance regarding dangerous, at-large and nuisance animals gives law enforcement direction on handling complaints and citizens a process to issue complaints. According to the document, dangerous animals may be destroyed, if necessary, at-large animals are unlawful and nuisance animals may be impounded and abated. Commissioner Pau. Wildman pointed out that the difference between the three types of animals is not clear and will need to be addressed. Citizens that are experiencing issues with these types of animals are directed to call law enforcement.

The Auditor/Treasurers office has a new employee, and she was introduced to the board. Judy Radil has owned and operated her own business for more than 20 years, handling the bookkeeping, financials and payroll for more than 30 small to medium-sized businesses.

In other action the board approved the sale of a 2009 International Tandem Truck for $30,000 to Reno Township. A resolution approving and implementing the Sauk River Watershed Collaborative workplan was passed. Following a review of the financial information, an authorization for expenses to cover the Auditor/Treasurer and Land and Resource Management Offices renovation was approved.

The next meeting of the board will be a work session on Tuesday, April 9 at 9 a.m.
