• Tennis team wins seven matches to help coach reach milestone
The Minnewaska Area boys tennis team is off to a 9-0 start after winning seven matches last week. The Lakers had opened up the season with a pair of matches at an indoor meet at Fargo, March 28, but the Lakers had all 5-2 and 7-0 scores last week in winning seven more.
The Lakers earned two wins over Fergus Falls (7-0) and YME (7-0) during a home triangular last Tuesday and then earned a 5-2 win at Benson-KMS, Thursday
On Friday, the Lakers won two more over Perham (5-2) and Crookston (5-2) during another home triangular, Friday, and Minnewaska Area closed out the week with another pair of wins at a triangular at Fargo, beating Moorhead (7-0) and East Grand Forks (5-2). A recap of the Saturday triangular will appear next week.
During the two wins at home, Friday, head coach Tara Reichmann earned her 500th career coaching victory. She is an unofficial 502-276 after the two wins, Saturday, after coaching girls tennis for 24 seasons and boys tennis for over 21 years.
“I’ve been lucky to have coached so many great players and teams over the years,” coach Reichmann said. “Although this an accomplishment I’m proud of, I think it’s more about longevity than anything else along with the fact that I’ve been blessed to have had so many great players that I’ve been able to coach.”
Through the first seven matches, the Lakers have five players that are still undefeated as Tenzin Dahl, Marshall Kopp and Landon Schiffler are all 7-0 for the Lakers, while Xavier Johnson is 6-0 and Carter LeClair is 5-0.
This week, the pace of the schedule doesn’t slow down much as the Lakers were set to compete in a triangular at St. Cloud Tech, Monday, host Lac qui Parle-DB, Tuesday (tomorrow) and play a WCC match at MACCRAY, Thursday.
