Track teams both place second at opening meet

The Minnewaska Area track and field teams opened up the 2024 season with runner-up finishes at the Pine to Prairie Meet at Concordia College last Tuesday night.
The Minnewaska girls had 89 points to place second behind Barnesville (119), while the Laker boys had 116 points to place second behind East Grand Forks (126).
Among those winning titles for the Lakers were the girls 3200 meter relay, Jayda Kolstoe in the girls shot put, Owen Meulebroeck in the boys 55 meter hurdles, the boys 800 meter relay and Jayce Kovarik in the boys pole vault.
The meet included 15 events for both girls and boys. The only events that weren’t included were the discus, 400 meter relay and 300 meter hurdles. In addition, the 100/110 meter hurdles were changed to 55 meters and the 100 meter dash was changed to 55 meters
The Lakers are set to compete at two meets this week. Minnewaska is set to run at the Morris Invitational, Tuesday (tomorrow) before racing at the Litchfield Invitational, Thursday, April 11.

The Minnewaska Area track and field teams competed at an indoor meet at Concordia College last Tuesday night.
Lauryn Ankeny, Jayda Kolstoe, Dacia Fleury and Olivia Danielson led the Laker girls to a runner-up finish at the opening meet.
Kolstoe won the shot put (37-8), while Fleury placed second in the 200 meter dash (28.9), third in the 55 meter dash (7.88) and third in the triple jump (31-10), Danielson was fourth in the 800 meter run (2:33.41), and Ankeny was second in the 400 (1:05.21) and fifth in the triple jump (30-3 1/4).
In addition, the 3200 meter relay team of Ella Larson, Piper Citrowske-Lee, Sydney Ankeny and Danielson was first with a time of 11:00.65, the 1600 meter relay team of Alia Randt, Citrowske-Lee, Danielson and Lauryn Ankeny was third in 4:36.95, and a second 3200 meter relay team from the Lakers placed third with a time of 11:33.13 (Jillian Deutsch, Sophia Wallin, Addison Kath and Lauryn Ankeny).
Other top six finishes for the Lakers included a sixth by Ella Larson in the 800 meter run (2:46.46), a third (Sydney Ankeny, 14:11.03) and fourth (Deutsch, 14:23.42) in the 3200 meter run, and a fourth by Phemie Oeltjen in the high jump (4-6).
Barnesville won six of the 15 events to claim the overall title.
• In the boys meet, Owen Meulebroeck, Carter Meyer, Zach Palmer, Jayce Kovarik and Ian Mills were among the top performers for the Lakers.
Kovarik won the pole vault with a leap of 11-0 and was also sixth in the 400 meter dash (58.82) as well as running on the second-place 3200 meter relay team with Carter Dinsmore, Mills and Palmer (9:38.89).
Meulebroeck had a big day, placing first in the 55 meter hurdles (8.79), third in the triple jump (36-10 3/4), first with the 800 meter relay (1:39.97), which also included Meyer, Kaiden Harvey and Josh Hippe, and third with the 1600 meter relay (4:02.68), which also included Hunter Stadsvold, Dinsmore and Palmer.
Palmer added a third in the 1600 meter run (5:22.13), while Mills was also second in the 3200 meter run (11:27.65), and Meyer was also second in the 55 meter dash (7.02) and second in the 200 meter dash (24.52).
Other top-six finishes included a second by Stadsvold in the 55 meter hurdles (9.35), a fourth by Luke Hoffman in the 1600 meter run (5:22.27) and fourth in the 3200 meter run (12:01.29) and a second place by Harvey in the triple jump (37-9).
