Boys tennis claims top seed in Section 8A

The Minnewaska Area boys went 2-1 last week, winning a pair of matches at the St. John’s Prep triangular last Tuesday before being swept at Foley, Thursday.
The Lakers, who are 19-3 overall including a 6-0 record in the WCC to win another conference title, beat St. Cloud Cathedral/SJP (7-0) and North Branch (5-2) at the triangular.
Next up is the Section 8AA Team and Individual Tourney, set for Monday through Wednesday at Osakis. The Lakers earned the top seed, while Crookston is seeded second followed by East Grand Forks, Thief River Falls, Detroit Lakes, Perham, NLS, Fergus Falls and Osakis.
at SJP triangular
The Lakers swept a pair of matches at a triangular at St. John’s Prep/SCC last Tuesday, beating the host team 7-0 and also winning against North Branch, 5-2.
The Lakers lost just one set in sweeping the four singles’ matches against SJP/SCC as Connor Quelle (6-4, 6-2), Tenzin Dahl (6-1, 6-1), Riley Thorfinnson (6-4, 6-4) and Aidric Vold (6-4, 5-7, 6-2) won at first through fourth singles, respectively.
In doubles, the Lakers lost only five total games as Drew Bleick and Carter LeClair shut out their opponents at first doubles, Marshall Kopp and Landon Schiffler won 6-3, 6-2 at second doubles and Xavier Johnson and Carson Beyer also won by a shutout at third doubles.
• During the other match, things were much tighter as Minnewaska again swept the three doubles’ matches while also winning two close matches at third and fourth singles.
Thorfinnson earned a 0-6, 6-2, 10-7 tiebreaker win at third singles and Beyer prevailed 6-4, 6-2 at fourth singles for two Laker points.
Quelle and Dahl, who will be teaming up for the Section 8A Individual Tourney in doubles, keyed a strong performance by the doubles with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at first doubles, while Kopp and Schiffler won easily at second doubles (6-1, 6-1) and Johnson and Carter Myrom also won by a 6-1, 6-1 score at third doubles.
Foley 7, Waska 0
The Lakers were swept by a very strong Foley team, Thursday at Foley, 7-0. Minnewaska Area did not win any sets against Foley, lowering their season mark to 19-3 in the process.
Coming the closest to winning a point were Carter LeClair, who fell 7-5, 6-4 at fourth singles, and Tenzin Dahl, who lost 6-4. 6-4 at second singles.
