Dave Schramm retires after 25 years of teaching

May 28, 1964 – Dennis Dale, publisher of the Cyrus Leader, announced that he would take over the Brooten Review. Dale purchased the Review from James McCoy.

Jerry Leedahl would be the speaker at the annual Memorial Day observance in Glenwood. The Rev. Merlyn Huke, pastor at Barsness and Chippewa Falls Lutheran Churches, would give the advocation and benediction. A junior auxiliary sextet, Janet Femrite, Linda Carlson, Christine Flom, Cathy Forbes, Debbie Ostrander and Elaine Skilbred, would sing. Bob Robards was scheduled to make additional remarks.

John L. Handon announced that he had sold his interest in the Glenwood Farmers Exchange to Wallace Ogdahl and Orville Haug. Hanson had also been manager for 16 years. Following him as manager would be Gordon Lindstrom, a Kittson County native. Hanson was currently on the city commission and president of the hospital board of directors and had formerly served the city as mayor.

May 30, 1974 – Over 100 years of teaching experience would leave the Glenwood school system with the retirement of three long-time teachers, Edna Grove, Marion Maher and Ted Schmeckpeper. Grove had spent 21 years teaching in Pope County, the last several as a fifth-grade teacher in Glenwood. Since 1950 Maher had also taught fifth grade in Glenwood, and Schmeckpeper had been a Glenwood High School teacher and coach since 1944.

Commencement exercises were set to be held in Villard, with school board members Ralph Lang and James Bailey distributing the diplomas. The commencement exercises would be the last duty of Russ Torfin, principal, who was leaving after 17 years with the system. Torfin was himself a Villard Graduate. Honor students included Agnes Brice, Debra Cowley, Martha Lang, Candace Stark, Jeff Walker and Mary Stein.

May 31, 1984 – Eighty-four Glenwood High School students graduated in the traditional Central school gym after questionable weather and lake flies canceled the event outdoors in the city park. Valedictorian was Craig Oeltjen and salutatorian was Barbara Katt.

Dave Schramm, a teacher in the Glenwood school district for 25 years, retired at the end of the year. Schramm had taught junior high math and, in later years, sixth-grade physical education.

May 30, 1994 – Minnewaska Area High School held commencement exercises for 121 graduating seniors. Sara Crumb was announced as the class valedictorian, and the salutatorian was Kim Ronning. The class of 1994 was the first class in which the students who completed the top three grades had done so at MAHS. Previously, students had attended Villard, Starbuck or Glenwood High Schools for part of their high school careers.

Dr. Robert Bösl had been named 1994 Family Physician of the Year by the Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians. Bösl was a physician at the Minnewaska District Hospital in Starbuck.

Lois Stadsvold of Starbuck had bought one quick-pick Powerball ticket from Tom’s Save Rite in Glenwood and had matched five numbers to win $100,000. Spring was a hectic time for the Stadsvolds so she had waited six weeks before claiming her winnings.

Zuber Architects, a local architectural firm, had been hired by the county to draw up specifications for the new approach to the Pope County Courthouse. Renovations were needed due to deteriorating and collapsing stonework in front of the building.

May 24, 2004 – The Pope County Courthouse renovation project would proceed as planned, beginning with preparation tasks this month. County commissioners approved $1,473,380 in funding for the structural updates during their regular meeting.

Minnewaska’s winning streak continued when they downed Benson/Hancock 4-1, then in the conference finale, beat Morris, 8-10, for the first-place title in the West Central South Conference.

The Minnewaska girls’ golf team played its last round of conference golf to place second in conference. Individually, Emily Roering took second and Alyssa Brown placed eighth as all-conference golfer (top 10 golfers in the conference).

May 26, 2014 – The Lake Minnewaska Marina, located near Lakeside Ballroom in Glenwood, is ready for use this summer, installed May 16 by Glacial Lakes Dock of Starbuck. This is the second year the marina has been located in that area on the lake, but this year it features enough slips for 36 boats and/or pontoons. The Marina features a wide center dock with two “T” docks, providing enough room for the 36 boat slips.

It’s back to the drawing board for county commissioners, who will ask again for a variance from the City of Glenwood to reduce the size of a planned redevelopment of the parking area in front of the Health and Human Services building along Minnesota Avenue. The variance would also allow the county to sell the eastern portion of the land to private parties with the intent to move that land back onto city and county tax rolls.

Minnewaska Area Elementary School kindergartners proudly donned their construction paper graduation caps and celebrated taking the big step into first grade. Students’ families and friends filled the MAES gym last Tuesday evening for the official kindergarten graduation ceremony.
