The Minnewaska Area boys golf team finished third in the WCC after placing third in the final conference meet of the season last Monday at Montevideo.

Morris Area-CA placed first at the final WCC meet to move ahead of the Lakers into second place behind league champion West Central Area.

The Lakers also golfed at the Benson Invitational last Wednesday, placing fourth of 10 teams in a meet won by Lac qui Parle Valley on a fifth-score tiebreaker.

This week, the postseason begins as the Lakers are set to golf in the Section 3AA Prelims at the Oakdale Golf Course, Thursday, May 23.

The top five teams and top golfers return to the same course, Wednesday, May 29 for the Section 3AA Finals and a chance to earn a berth at the state meet.

Last year, Riley Larson golfed at state for the second-straight year, while Thatcher Sherlin missed a state berth by seven strokes and Zach Gugisberg missed out on a trip to state by 13 strokes.

WCC meet at Montevideo

The Lakers finished third in the final WCC meet of the season last Monday at Montevideo, while Morris Area-CA earned first and WCA placed second.

That gave the Knights the overall WCC boys golf title with 59 points, followed by Morris Area with 52 and Minnewaska Area with 50.

The Lakers placed second in four meets and also earned two thirds and two fourths.

Charlie Hanson continued his torrid play this spring with a 32 to earn medalist honors by six strokes over two players, including Waska’s Thatcher Sherlin, who carded a 38 to tie with WCA’s Mitchell Dewey.

Four other golfers tied for fourth with 39s.

Zach Gugisberg had a 40 to earn eighth place overall for the Lakers, while Chase Wacker shot a 44 to earn 19th and Kash Christman had a 46 to place 27th for the Lakers’ fourth score.

Minnewaska, which was missing Blake Nelson due to the National BPA trip, also had a 47 by Tyler Moscho to place 28th and 49s from Sam Jones and Kody Ward, who tied for 36th.

Benson Invitational

The Lakers placed fourth of 10 teams at the Benson Invitational last Wednesday.  Lac qui Parle won a tight five-team battle for the championship with a score of 332.

That’s exactly the same score for Osakis, but LQP won the title with a fifth-score of 92, while Dawson-Boyd was three strokes back in third place with a 335 total, Minnewaska was fourth at 339 and Morris Area-CA placed fifth with a 340 total.

Leading the way for the Lakers was Zach Gugisberg, who shot an 18-hole total of 77 to tie for third.

LQP’s Carson Besonen and Osakis’ Drew Imdieke tied for medalist honors with 76s.

Thatcher Sherlin was next for the Lakers with an 83 to earn 10th, while Kash Christman shot an 85 (13th), Chase Wacker had a 94 (32nd), Tyler Moscho carded a 95 (34th) and Braxton Kragenbring came home with a 97 (40th).
