Boat line to open at Bottle Bay

From the Pope County Tribune, Thursday, May 15, 1924

Work on the construction of the Starbuck-Westport state highway is underway and progressing at a good rate. The crew that is camped west of Glenwood, have been working the stretch west of the Minnewaska hotel and the outfit at the Hanarahn farm south of Villard, are doing a good job of making a fill just north of this farm. As this is one of the latest roads to be built it will also be the last word in road building, according to those in charge, and when completed will be the best piece of state road built.

I am opening up a boat line at Bottle bay by Volrath’s Fox farm. Lines, hooks and minnows. Boat service throughout the season. Emil Stoltz.

After the Ladies’ chorus contest at Litchfield was over, Misses Josie and Marie Flaten, Ella Lee and Mrs. J.C. Wollan motored to St. Paul to see “Blossom Time.” They returned here Friday.

H.J. Peters, owner and manager of the Sunset Beach hotel on the south shore of Lake Minnewaska, has the hostelry all ready for the opening of the summer season, which opens tomorrow. Mr. Peters has had a crew getting the hotel property, boats and other equipment of the place in shape for some time, and in addition to the cottages which have graced this fine view of the lake, has four more cottages under construction on the east side of the hotel. Mr. Peters is looking forward to a very successful season this year, having a large list of guests booked for the summer, and will start tomorrow with a goodly number of people at the hotel, who are coming for the opening of the fishing season. These people are coming from various states throughout the middle west.

From the Glenwood Herald, Thursday, May 15, 1924

Oscar B. Ostgulen last Saturday filed for the office of clerk of courts in Pope county. This now makes three who have filed for this office and thus brings it into the primaries. The others who have filed are Mr. Frank E. Reed, the present incumbent and Mrs. Hannah Fulmer who filed some time ago.

The graduating exercises for the Glenwood schools will be held in the McCauley opera house Thursday evening, May 29. Dr. N.J. Gould Wickey of the Concordia College, Moorhead, will give the commencement address. The baccalaureate sermon will be delivered on the evening of Sunday, May 25th in the Congregational church by the Rev. E.W. Benedict. There are fifty in the senior class this year. Twenty will receive their diplomas from the Normal department. Since all the members of this class have a high school education they will all receive a first grade certificate from the state.

The Herald man went up to the Soo station and invaded Mr. George Cheeseman’s domain the other day. His intention was to visit all places of interest on the Soo hill and give the readers of the Herald the benefit of his observations. It was found that there was so much to see and so much of interest to tell, that space in the Herald would not allow more than a little at the time and so it will have to be divided into sections.

From the Starbuck Times, Friday, May 16, 1924

B.R. Hagen, who resigned his position at the First National Bank last week, began with his new business on Monday. Mr. Hagen bot the exclusive right to six counties, Pope, Stearns, Swift, Kandiyohi, Meeker and Chippewa, for the sale of “Shell-on-Salted Peanuts.” A little stand is placed in confectionery stores, restaurants, etc, on which are hung a number of bags of peanuts. The peanut is salted through the shell, making it very delicious. This process is patented and only those having the right can sell them. Mr. A.R. Samuelson bought the right to four counties, Douglas, Ottertail, Wadena and Todd and is busy getting in his stands in various stored in that territory.

The fire department this week erected a fine 70 feet iron flagpole on the village property next to the town hall. The work was supervised by Ole Olson chief, with the assistance of S.O. Koland, John Overson and other members of the department. It was raised Tuesday evening. The pole was set seven feet in the ground in a cement base. The flag is furnished by the Legion, a fine flag that was donated to them some years ago by Mrs. Alfred Smedstad.

The fire department was called out Friday morning about 7:30 when the ceiling of Matteson’s restaurant caught fire from an overheated stove-pipe which passes through the ceiling in the basement. A pail of water poured around the pipe from upstairs put it out and there was nothing for the department to do.
