Someone has suggested that we elect a new set of County officers and move the courthouse to Starbuck. We agree that it would be a good idea, especially the last shot.

The Sr. class play, “An Early Bird”, given Friday evening at the town hall, was a huge success. Those taking part were Lester Friedman, Clifford Schuetz, Grant Torgerson, Edner Rolien, Sylvanus Tessem, Oliver Kyvig, Clarence Nelson, Myrtis Wesen, Thelma Sando, Nora Dahl, Hilma Sando and Edna Olson. Miss Glesne was the director. 

The Ladies Aid of Immanuel will have an article sale on May 17, lunch and supper will be served. The menu includes fried chicken, scalloped potatoes, pickles, lefse, pie, rosettes, sprutbakels, cakes and coffee. The charge for the supper will be 25¢ for adults and 10¢ for the children. 

Funeral services for Nils S. Spangrud were held at the St. John’s church on Wednesday, Rev. G.O. Forde officiating. Mr. Spangrud is survived by the following children: Sigvard, Mrs. Mons Ness, Mabel, Carl, Alfred, Emelia, Amanda and Olivia. He is also survived by a brother, Martin and a sister, Marit. His wife died in 1922 and a son, Oliver died in 1898. 

The White Bear Lake Baseball Boys organized a baseball team when they met for practice at the Finstad pasture on Sunday. The boys will play New Prairie next Sunday on the home diamond. 

The following program will be given at the Fron Y.P.S. next Sunday evening: recitation, Ada Nygaard; piano duet, Mrs. Olaf Wollan and Mrs. M.C. Johnshoy; son by the boys Jr. choir; reading, Dora Erickson; vocal duet, Mabel Carlson and Leo Sylvester.

The Senior Class of 1934 will present a 3-act play under the direction of Supt. W.A. Peterson. “The End of the Lan”. The following members are in the cast of characters: Jim Denver, a wonderful parentage – Glen Berge; Harry Saunders (Hal, his pal) – Dorvan Skoglund; John Randahl, a rich farmer – Lorrin Dahlager; Bud Nix, his hired man – Ivend Holen; Messenger boy, “Sure Thing” – James Pederson; Coral Rangdahl, John Randahl’s only daughter – Helen Wollan; Ma Randahl, her mother- Elsa Arneson; Ellen Seabright, Coral’s bosom friend – Clara Voight; Martha Elizabeth Ann, servant at Randahl’s – Ruth Brenden; Bessie Reed, an orphan – Jeanette Ingvarson; Mrs. Kate Sanders, Hal’s mother – Eva Larson. Prices for the evening performance are 25¢ for adults, high school and students 15¢. All reserved seats are 25¢ on sale by Purity Drug Store. 

A large audience was present at the auditorium here Friday evening to hear the A’capella Choir of the Glenwood High School under the direction of Maurice F. Carr. The people of the Starbuck community are very grateful to their neighbors across the lake for this splendid concert, and we hope we may have the opportunity to hear them again. 

Soloists who appeared with the choir were Ruth Ruble, Violin; Florence Velander, soprano; Adelaide Churchil, piano; and Erling Wollan, tenor. 

They are now on sale at the local post office Mother’s Day 3 cent stamps. On Sunday, May 13, the people of the United States will pay their respects to motherhood.

Rural Schools Field Day at Starbuck on Saturday, May 12th. 500 rural school pupils are expected to participate in various athletic events. The Starbuck Community Band will furnish music during the day. 

Hospital Day to be observed Saturday in Starbuck community.

Funeral services for Pfc. Claremont Gorder, 37, were held from the Indherred Lutheran Church Saturday afternoon. Mr. Gorder passed away May 3 from Rheumatic Fever. He is survived by his wife, the former Ella Berge. 

Pfc. Herman Larson of Camp Swift, Texas is enjoying a week’s vacation with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sever Larson.

A deal was made this week whereby Henry Nodland sold the former Shell station which he had been using for an office, to Floyd Lund. Mr. Lund plans to move to Starbuck this fall. 

Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Pederson and family attended commencement exercises at Fairview Hospital School of Nursing Sunday evening. Their daughter, Eleanor was one of the graduates. 

Mr. and Mrs. Wm Kuusisto of Minneapolis are the parents of a son born May 8. 

For numerous flights over enemy territory as a co-pilot attached to the Marine Photographic Squadron in the Solomon Islands area from January 5 to August 1943, Marine Major Brenten Myking has been awarded the Air Medal. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henning Myking of Starbuck.

The senior class of Starbuck High School presented their class play, “Mother IS a Freshman” Friday evening. Those taking parts were allene Giesen, Joyce Walters, David Hammero, Dagny Barsness, Robert Billehus, Jerry Pederson, LuAnne Peterson, Wanda Pederson, Margaret Aslakson, Vernetta Lee, Norman Opheim, Norris Stenson, Devon Maanum and Anne Olson. 

A boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Ronnie May 2. 

On May 23, the Chippewa Lutheran Church, better known as the Rolling Forks Church, will be the scene of the ordination of Irwin Augusten Flaten. He is the son of Mr. and  Mrs. Carl Flaten. 

Miss Arlene Refsal, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Refsal, and Tilfred Moen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Moen of Glenwood, were married at Indherred Lutheran Church April 24. The couple will make their home near Glenwood. 

Marilyn Hoverud is the new dental assistant at the office of Dr. W.W. Larson.

The annual ‘spring variety show’ sponsored by the Starwaska Woman’s Club played to three full houses over the weekend and netted better than $700.00 for the Pope County District Hospital Fund. 

Six different Starbuck High School musical groups of individuals received stars at the regional music contest held at Breckenridge Saturday. 

Sandra Bredeson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Boyd Bredeson, graduated from Concordia College, Moorhead, on Saturday, May 5. She was one of over 400 to receive diplomas at special exercises held at Memorial Auditorium at 3 p.m.  

Tom Hagert was elected Monday evening to be president of the Starbuck Lions Club for the coming year. He will take office at special installation ceremonies at the first meeting in June. He will succeed Virgil Amundson, whose term will expire.

Bonnie Johnston, daughter of Bob and Marilyn Johnston, will graduate May 17 from Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa. 

Births: A son, Blake Charles to Charles and Karla Erickson April 8; a daughter, Mareta Kate to Doris (Samuelson) and Brad Weinrich of Hillman on May 4; a son, Brent Reid to Nancy (Schwendemann) and Tim Swanson of Cold Spring April 23. 

Harold Hagen was recently honored by Barsness Township for 30 years of dedicated service as the township clerk. 

At the request of Congressman Vin Weber, the Starbuck Area Chamber of Commerce was presented with a U.S. Flag in honor of the world record lefse made during last summer’s centennial celebration and received in the Norwegian Record Book Schibsted.

Funeral services for Ralph Ranum will be held today at the Starbuck Elementary School gymnasium. He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline; one son, Robert and two daughters, Rochelle and Rachel.

Births: A daughter, Marisa Ann to Dough and Lisa Toivonen of Red Wing; a daughter, Lora Nichole to Brian and Kathy Carlson April 29; a son, Kody Anthony to Mr. and Mrs. Ken Bechers of Northfield May 4. 

Matt Peterson of Starbuck, author of the book, “Starbuck High School Basketball” will be at Lefse Dagen VIII May 14 to sell and autograph his popular new book. 

John Larson, son of Vernon and the late Ardis (Skoglund) Larson, formerly of Starbuck, has accepted a position as a correspondent in Los Angeles, CA for NBS’s “Dateline” with Jane Pauley and Stone Phillips.

Army Specialist Keith Rubel, of the 3rd Armored Calvary Regiment, presented a flag that was flown over Ramadi, Iraq, to Starbuck VFW Post 4582 members, Ray Holten, Leonard Buysse and Walt Larson. Rubel is from Glenwood and returned from Iraq in March. 

A Starbuck man’s plan to host an outdoor rock concert was met with questions and concerns from county commissioners during last Wednesday’s Pope County board meeting. Jay Campbell, owner of Jay’s Radio Control Race Park, south of Starbuck, informed the board of his intent to host “Udder Fest,” a 24-hour rock concert featuring local teen bands, on his property from noon on June 12 through noon on June 13. 

During Monday night’s meeting, Starbuck city council members were informed of yet another police chief job offer rejection. The search for the city’s top cop will now turn to internal candidates. Last week, Ron MacKenzie declined the city’s $18 per hour, $400 per month insurance benefit package.

Eagle Bank and AmericanWest Bank have entered into a definitive agreement for Eagle Bank to acquire the Starbuck branch of the AmericanWest Bank – a location that many locals still refer to as First National Bank of Starbuck. The transaction, which is subject to regulatory approval and other customary conditions of closing, is expected to be completed in the third quarter. Upon completion of the acquisition, the location will become a branch of Eagle Bank. 

Lefse Dagen 28 ewill take place on Saturday, May 17 at the Starbuck Depot. The open house hours are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. In addition to the Depot building, the one-room schoolhouse which houses the Starbuck School Museum and the Skoglund/Ness building which houses the former Standard Lumber office, Dr. Giesen display, and old Starbuck Theatre equipment, will be open to the public. 

Kaley Poegel, the GHES science teacher for grades 4-6, took the entire sixth grade class to compete in the Jr. Evirothon on April 23. This competition took place at Prairie Woods Environmental Learning Center near Spicer. They competed against teams made up of five sixth-eighth graders from other schools in the area. After much research, studying and dedication one of four GHES teams took third place and were awarded medals. The entire sixth grade class, however, earned the trophy because they worked hard as a team to accomplish this goal!
