The Minnewaska Area track and field teams hosted the 7-team Minnewaska Area Invitational last Tuesday, finishing up the event right before a rainstorm hit the area.
The Lakers finished second in both competitions as Eden Valley-Watkins/Kimball earned the team title in the girls meet by 27 points over the Lakers (167-140) with Pelican Rapids placing third (89 points) and NLS fourth (81), and the Sauk Centre boys edged the Lakers by one point for the boys title (137-136) with EVW/Kimball placing third (117) and Pelican Rapids earning fourth (99).
The Lakers had five titlists in the boys competition and three in the girls as Maeson Tank won the 400 and 800 meter races, Owen Meulebroeck won both hurdling races, Jayda Kolstoe earned the title in the girls discus, Dacia Fleury won the triple jump, and the boys 1600 and girls 3200 relays also both earned victories.
The Lakers were also set to compete at the NLS Invitational, Thursday, but that competition was canceled due to weather.
Minnewaska Area has a big week in store this week as the Lakers are set to compete at the Section True-Team Meet at Montevideo, Tuesday, May 7, and at the Melrose Invitational, Thursday, May 9.
Minnewaska Invite
The Minnewaska Area track and field teams both placed second at a home invitational last Tuesday night. The meet finished just before a rain storm hit the area, but the boys pole vault was the only event not to be completed.
That might have made the difference for the Laker boys, who lost the team title by one point to Sauk Centre (137-136).
In the final event, the 1600 meter relay, the Laker team of Carter Meyer, Jayce Kovarik, Owen Meulebroeck and Maeson Tank earn the title with a time of 3:37.01, but Sauk Centre finished third to stay ahead of the Lakers by one point.
Other titles for the Lakers included two firsts by Tank in the 400 meter dash (52.03) and 800 meter run (2:05.01), while Meulebroeck continued his great spring with titles in the two hurdle events, the 110 high hurdles (16.61) and 300 meter intermediates (41.71).
Ian Mills earned a second in the 1600 meter run (5:04.05), while Meulebroeck also was second in the triple jump (38-9).
“I thought our boys did a fantastic job of coming out and competing really well,” boys head coach Zach Traphagen said. “The competition was great, and we were able to post really good results in some events and obviously know there are other areas we need to continue to improve on.
“The most important aspects at this point in the season are to keep kids healthy and strive for consistent improvement each meet. The True Team Section meet is next Tuesday, so every practice and every meet is another opportunity for us to get better.”
The Lakers also had six thirds as Hunter Stadsvold was third in the 110 hurdles (17.19) and fifth in the 300 hurdles (46.49), Meyer was third in the 100 meter dash (11.74) and third in the 200 (24.18), Zach Palmer was third in the 3200 meter run (11:04.14) and Mills was fourth (11:30.92), the 400 meter relay team of Jeythan Quirindongo, Caden Christensen, Kolton Rogers and Kaiden Harvey was third with a time of 47.58), and Harvey was also third in the high jump (5-6) and triple jump (38-0).
