Peters Resort named to the Registry of Historic Places 

June 4, 1964 – Two young boys were killed when the car which they were riding in was involved in a collision with a second vehicle at the intersection of Highway 55 and 29. The family was returning to South Dakota after a visit with family near Carlos. A Pope County man was dead after a car accident near New London, and a Villard man and his son escaped injury late at night when their car collided with two big hogs in the road near Lake Amelia. 

The annual 4-H Field Day was set to be held. On the committees for the event were Howard Teigen, Orville Dahlseng, Arnold Pederson, David McIver, Harold Oeltjen, James Erickson, Howard Nelson, Walter Butler, Harold Anderson, Stanley Behl and N.P. Hanson. 

Top award winners at the annual Villard High School Awards Day ceremonies were Howard Sorenson, Nancy Torfin, Jud Ommen, Donna Gaffaney, Jerry Jensen and Ron Reichmann. 

June 6, 1974 – The Glenwood High School track team won the region No. 6 Class A track crown in competition at Morris. Coach Dale Gasser’s Lakers took five first places. Among those participating were Dale Kramer, Greg McIver, Greg Rosten, Ken Neumann, Bunker Hill, Kevin Backman and Jeff Schramm. The high school baseball team bowed in the District No. 22 competition to Bertha-Hewitt when they lost by a score of 9-8. The Lakers at one time during the game had a five-run lead, but BH finally won in extra innings. 

Grant Hustad Co. announced expansion plans and a decision to move the company to a new 14-acre site.

  High school seniors claiming big awards during the announcement of scholarship winners at the annual commencement proceedings included Julie Schramm, Diane Weispfennig, Kathleen Bryce, Gary Paulson, James Bennett, Beth Bowen, Harley Hanson and Greg Dvorsak. 

June 7, 1984 – Erv and Betty Zuber organized the Lakeside Dance Club with the idea of “Saving ballroom dancing” – and also perhaps the Lakeside Ballroom itself. The Zubers had been dancing for over 60 years and had the same booth at Lakeside since 1946. Dancing was one of the reasons they chose to live in Glenwood.

Pam Bennett was chosen to reign as Pope County Dairy Princess for 1984. Her attendants were Janet Baalson, Kristi Hagen and Karen Nygaard. Bennett lived on the same farm near Farwell as generations of her family had.

Charges were still being filed and one person was sentenced in connection with vandalism against the UPA/CPA power line through the county.

Peters Resort was finishing a remodeling project which would restore the hotel and was actually centered around quilts of Fern Swedenburg. The resort was also named to the National Registry of Historic Places.    

June 6, 1994 – With a win over Morris, the Minnewaska Lakers Girls’ Softball team had won the right to advance to the state softball tournament in North Mankato. This was to be the team’s first-ever trip to the state tournament.

Voters in the cities of Starbuck and Long Beach and the townships of Minnewaska and White Bear Lake were to go to the polls on Tuesday, June 7, to narrow down the candidates for county commissioner for District No. 1. Eight candidates were on the primary ballot and were seeking the seat of Ralph Ranum who had died on May 6. The candidates were Jack R. Borowski, Charles C. Brainard, Richard A. Engebretson, Iver O. Aal, David Jellum, Marilyn Johnston, Michael Johnsrud and Jan Ronning.  

The Minnewaska Area Schools Board of Education had approved spending $ 97,450 to remove the asbestos from Central High School in Glenwood. The board had made the decision after discussion on one option, only removing the asbestos from the east wing of the school and leaving the asbestos in the west wing, which a group of citizens calling themselves the “Save the Auditorium Committee” proposed to save.

May 31, 2004 – A Glenwood man was sentenced May 25 for felony theft of property from the Lakeside Ballroom. The 43-year-old former manager of the ballroom was sentenced to 135 days in jail. He was ordered by Judge Jon Stafsholt to spend 30 days in jail with Huber work-release privileges starting June 14. He could then take 60 days off the sentence by working with the sentence to serve crew and get one day credit for every eight hours worked. He would be given credit for the remaining 45 days if he cooperated.

A total of 80 scholarships having a value of $71,700 were awarded to graduating seniors at Minnewaska Area High School. Honors night was held May 24 in the MAHS auditorium, and 57 students were awarded scholarships from a number of local organizations and individuals. 

Again this year, five students were presented the Howard and Viola Williams College Tuition Scholarship. This Year’s awards were for $6,000 each for the seniors who had their names randomly selected from 83 applicants.  

June 2, 2014 – Brownie Girl Scout Troop 253 has spent this year learning about the wonders of water. Last week they took a tour of the Glenwood water and sewage system with Dave Perryman and Tait Blair. They learned where our water comes from and where it goes. The girls also printed their own T-shirts at Screen Prints Plus with Pat Douvier. The troop designed the shirt to share the “Save Water” message with others. 

Bryce Stallman was one of those rare 17-year-olds who knew exactly what he wanted to do with his life after high school. That’s why just six days after he became a 2014 graduate of Minnewaska High School, Bryce is heading back to Fort Benning U.S. Army training center in Georgia this Thursday for more specific infantry training. 

The Central Square Auditorium in Glenwood played host to a large crowd on Memorial Day, gathered there to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in our nation’s military. The program was emceed by Pope County Commissioner and Vietnam veteran Gordy Wagner and included a tribute to all branches of the military, musical sections by brass quartet Four on the Floor, a vocal performance by County Coordinator Jim Thoreen and a reading by Minnewaska Area High School senior Alex Elwood.
