The Minnewaska Area softball team was eliminated for the season after losing 8-2 to Pipestone in a consolation round game during the Section 3AA Tourney, Saturday, May 25 at Marshall.

The Lakers, who won their first section game over NLS (6-5) before losing to Morris Area and Pipestone, finished the season with a 7-16 overall record under first year coach Luke Barkeim, a record which included a 4-10 mark in the WCC.

Morris Area won this year’s WCC title with a perfect 14-0 record, followed by Melrose Area (11-3), West Central Area (10-4), BOLD (8-6), Sauk Centre (6-8), Minnewaska Area (4-10), Benson (3-11) and Montevideo (0-14).

Seniors lost to graduation from this year’s team are Jenna Drewes, Ally Mogard, Melanie Lara, Emara Sanow, Trelana Johnson and Xi Li.

Pipestone 8, Waska 3 

The Lakers and Arrows were tied 3-3 through five innings before Pipestone scored five runs in the sixth to earn an 8-3 victory and send Minnewaska home for the season.

The Lakers ended their season with a 7-16 record after going 4-3 over their last seven games.

Minnewaska led 1-0 after one inning and the score was 1-1 through three.  The Lakers added another run in the fourth to go up 2-1 and, after Pipestone scored two in the top-half of the fifth, the Lakers countered with another run in the bottom-half of the inning for another tie.

Mataya Mix started on the mound, but left after pitching six strong innings and giving up seven hits and four runs.

Norah VanZee pitched the final inning, giving up four runs and was tagged with the loss.

Offensively, five players had two hits each for the Arrows, while Ally Mogard led the Lakers, going 2-for-3 with an RBI, run, walk and two stolen bases.

Adding one hit each were Emma Poegel (also an RBI and stolen base) and Eliana Marthaler (also a run and stolen base), while Carly Jergenson had a walk and stolen base and Ella Roering walked twice.
