The Starbuck Stars competed at the Stearns County Classic Saturday and Sunday, going 0-3 against some of the best amateur baseball teams in the state.

The Stars played two games, Saturday, losing to the Cold Spring Rockies (10-0) and Foley (10-2).  On Sunday, the Stars dropped a non-league game to the Cold Spring Springers (3-0).

The Stars fell to 4-4 overall with the three losses.  Coming up next for the team is a game at home against Atwater at 1:30 p.m., Sunday followed by a game at Raymond, Wednesday, June 12 and another game at home against Regal, Friday, June 14.

Stearns Classic

The Stars went 0-3 at the Stearns County Classic, Saturday and Sunday, at Lake Henry and St. Martin.

During the opening 10-0 loss to the Cold Spring Rockies, the Stars had just one hit, while Cold Spring had 10, including three homeruns.

The Rockies had at least one run in every inning, including three in the sixth to end the game early due to the 10-run rule.

Colin Richards took the loss on the mound with relief held from M. Gruber.

•  The Stars’ offense came alive in the second game, a 10-2 loss to Foley.

PJ Johnson went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Austin Ver Steeg was 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Stars’ offense.

Starbuck led 2-0 after two innings, but Foley scored the next 10 runs to win in a rout.  Adding one hit each for the Stars were Mitch and Matt Gruber and Drew Olsonawski.

Foley belted out 11 hits, including five doubles and one homerun.

The Stars committed five errors leading to five unearned runs.

•  In the final game, Sunday, the Cold Spring Springers edged the Stars in a defensive battle, 3-0.

M. Gruber, Austin Ver Steeg, Jackson Hendrickson had hits for the Stars, while Ver Steeg absorbed the loss on the mound, pitching all six innings and giving up six hits, two earned runs and two walks with three strikeouts.
