•  Glenwood-Lowry falls to Sleepy Eye in Division II title game, 7-4

The Glenwood-Lowry baseball team placed second at the State American Legion Division II Baseball Tournament this past weekend at BOLD.

The G-L Legion Posts 187/253 won their first two games over Esko (12-5) and Rushford-Peterson (5-2) before losing to Sleepy Eye in the finals, 7-4.

Glenwood-Lowry, coached by Joe Alexander and Jeff Panitzke, closed out the season with a 23-6 overall record.  The team was 8-4 at one point in the season before going 15-2 the rest of the way.

Fosston topped Rushford-Peterson in the third place game, while NLS came back from an opening loss to win the consolation title.

•  Last year at the State Legion Tourney, the G-L Legion went 1-2 to place fourth, beating DGF in the first game (8-1), but losing two-straight games on walk-off hits to EV-Watkins (2-1) and LaCrescent (6-4).

The Glenwood-Lowry Legion has now earned three state berth in the last four years.  The team lost two close games in 2021 before going 1-2 last summer and 2-1 this year.

Glen-Lowry 12, Esko 5

The Glenwood-Lowry-Legion earned a berth in the semifinals with a 12-5 win over Esko in the first game, Friday at BOLD.

Dylan Alexander went 3-for-5 at the plate, while PJ Johnson was 2-for-2 with a run and four RBI and also pitched a complete game to earn the win.

All in all, it was a great way to start the tourney as 10 different G-L batters had at least one hit each.

Esko led 5-4 after four innings before G-L scored eight more runs over the final three innings to earn the lopsided win.

Alexander went 3-for-5 with a run and double to lead a 14-hit offensive attack, while Johnson was 2-or-2 with a run, walk, double, sacrifice, hit-by-pitch and four RBI.  Try to repeat that quickly!

Connor Erickson also had two hits, going 2-for-5 with two RBI, while Jack Majerus, Alex Panitzke, Noah Jensen, Austin Ballhagen, Levi Johnson, Nathan Dell and Riley Dell also had one hit each for the Lakers.

Johnson pitched all seven innings, scattering six hits and giving up five runs (four earned) with two walks and six strikeouts.

Glen-Low 5, Rush-Pet 2

Ryland Martin, Connor Erickson and Dylan Alexander led the Lakers to a 5-2 win over Rushford-Peterson in the semifinals, Saturday, earning the Glenwood-Lowry Legion a berth in the Legion Division II championship game.

Martin improved to 8-1 for the season with the complete-game win.  He allowed six hits, two runs and two walks with three strikeouts.

The Lakers outhit Rushford-Peterson, 7-6, with Alexander going 2-for-3 with an RBI and Erickson going 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.

G-L led 3-0 through four innings, but R-P made things interesting with two runs in the fifth before the Lakers plated one more run in the bottom-half of the fifth and sixth innings.

Jack Majerus, PJ Johnson and Austin Ballhagen also had hits for the Lakers, while Levi Johnson was 0-for-1 with two RBI and two sacrifices, and Ballhagen also walked once, stole two bases and had a sacrifice.

Sleepy Eye 7, Glen-Low 4

The Lakers fell to Sleepy Eye in the title game, Sunday, 7-4.  Glenwood-Lowry trailed 3-0 after three innings, but scored two in the fourth and two more in the fifth to claim a 4-3 lead after 4 1/2 innings.

Sleepy Eye, which outhit the Lakers 12-4, scored three runs of its own in the bottom-half of the fifth to retake the lead for good at 6-4 and then added one more run in the sixth for insurance,

Jon Petermann went 3-for-3 with a run, RBI and walk to lead the Sleepy Eye offense, while Cody Schultz had a big two-run homer for the champs.

The Lakers managed just four hits and also had the benefit of four walks, three hit-by-pitch and three Sleepy Eye errors.

Dylan Alexander, who had six hits during the three-game tourney, went 1-for-4 with a run and stolen base, while PJ Johnson was 1-for-2 while also being hit-by-a-pitch twice, Connor Erickson and Marc Gruber were both 1-for-2 with an RBI, Noah Jensen was 0-for-1 with a run, two walks and hit-by-a-pitch, and Austin Ballhagen was 0-for-2 with an RBI and walk.

Alex Panitzke started on the mound for G-L, but left after three innings and after giving up three runs on five hits.  Gruber pitched the next two innings and was tagged with the loss, while Nathan Dell pitched one inning, yielding three hits and one run.

G-L batters struck out nine times during the game, while Sleepy Eye had just two strikeouts.
