Gators top Montevideo, 99-87

Becca Femrite, Melena Longtin, Clare Barnstuble and two relay teams won titles to lead the Minnewaska Area-Morris Area Gators to a 99-87 win at the University of MN-Morris pool. The meet had been set for Montevideo, but was moved to UM-Morris at the last minute.
Femrite won the 200 freestyle (2:11.14) and 500 freestyle (6:00.28), while Longtin won the 50 freestyle (25.79) and 100 freestyle (57.35), Barnstuble won the diving portion of the meet and the 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams also won during the conference opener for the team.
“It was a wonderful meet tonight for the Gators,” coach Sam Oellien said. “We were very happy to have our JV swimmers there with us, some of them for their first meet; and they really showed up and surprised us at times.
“Overall an amazing meet. I am so proud of all the Gators!”
The team is now set to compete at Albany, Tuesday, Sept. 3 before getting ready for another meet at UM-Morris, Tuesday, Sept. 10.
vs. Montevideo
The Gators earned a 99-87 win over Montevideo, Thursday at UM-Morris. Minnewaska Area won seven of the 12 events and Montevideo won five.
Becca Femrite had two of those titles, winning the 200 freestyle (2:11.14) and 500 freestyle (6:00.28), while Melena Longtin also had two firsts, winning the 50 freestyle (25.79) and 100 freestyle (57.35).
In addition, Clare Barnstuble led a strong contingent in diving by placing first with 199.5 points and Ella Roering was right behind in second with 190.2 points
Also winning titles were the 200 freestyle relay team of Lyla Stadtherr, Sydney Gibson, Femrite and Longtin (1:58.46) and the 400 freestyle relay team comprised of the same four swimmers (4:04.21).
Mesa Kittelson added seconds in the 200 individual medley (2:44.36) and 100 butterfly (1:09.45), while Stadtherr was second in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.74) and 50 free (26.81), Jillian Schott was second in the 100 backstroke (1:23.64), Gibson was second in the 100 freestyle (1:02.54), Isabel Guerra was third in the 200 freestyle (2:28.19) and Gibson was also third in the 50 free (27.7).
“In the varsity 50 meters, the Gators went wild with Melena Longtin in first with a time of 25.79, Lyla Stadtherr in second with a time of 26.81 and Sydney Gibson in third with another personal best time of 27.7,” coach Oellien said.
“We had 7 divers for the Gators tonight. That is amazing. The Gators also saw some new personal bests in the 100 Free, Isabel Guerra qualified for section in the 100 Free, Mesa Kittelson was able to qualify for sections in the 50 Free, and in the final event (the 400 freestyle relay), Becca Femrite had a section qualifying time in the 100 Free.”
• In the JV competition, the Gators won easily, 110-38, winning every competition.
Winning titles for the JV Gators were the 200 yard medley relay team of Willow Kelly, River Reed, Raelyn Williams and Ivy Christians (2:47.32), Abbigail Peterson in the 200 freestyle (2:42.45), Emily Nelson in the 100 IM (1:26.62), Addisen Johnson in the 50 free (33.67), Xareni Cano Nieto in diving, Tenley Steinhofer in the 50 yard butterfly (40.22), Aranza Guerrero Lara in the 100 free (1:13.53), the 200 freestyle relay team of Kendra Steffan, Steinhofer, Stefanek and Heidelberger (2:21.18), Lilie Tonak in the 100 backstroke (1:38.32), Stefanek in the 100 breaststroke (1:42.33) and the 400 yard freestyle relay team of Claire Zenk, Hayden Fadness, Sadie Daniels and Heidelberger (5:17.4).
