Moana, a malnourished dog brought to Pope County Humane Society, is clearly starving for food and medical care, but is full of love. -August 14, 2024. Glenwood, Minn.

On August 12, Pope County Humane Society was contacted by local law enforcement about a community member who found a severely malnourished dog near Brooten.

“To say we were shocked was an understatement”, said Zoe Johnson, Operations Manager. “Our hearts just broke for Moana,” said Marisa Jacobson, Medical Care Manager. The staff at PCHS barely recognized Moana from months before when she was picked up and brought to the shelter as a stray dog before someone came to claim her. Then, she was a normal weight and a normal dog.

Moana is a 2 year-old Pitbull mix who is supposed to weigh 50 lbs. Moana was brought to Glacial Ridge Veterinary Clinic in Glenwood, MN to start the process of getting her fully assessed and on the road to recovery. Moana came in at a measly 29.3 lbs. and is now on a special diet to help her gain weight back in a safe way while we wait for her testing to see what other treatments and care she may need. Moana is also very weak and unsteady due to her body starting to eat at her muscles to try to survive.

Despite the terrible struggle Moana has been through, she is full of love to give. Moana has been a happy and loving dog since being at Pope County Humane Society. Her tail is always wagging, and she loves to give the staff kisses. Despite her being weak and unsteady, she loves toys and playing when she can.

“While we are sad about what Moana went through, we are grateful that her path led her back to us. She is in good hands now and will get all the love and help she needs on her long road to recovery,” said Shauney Gloege, President, Board of Directors.
