Can you remember riding in a Democrat wagon? During Horse and Buggy Days, this vehicle was a must on farms and for most town residents. With its platform on top, and low boxed, it functioned as a farm pickup truck, and with its movable and removable seats, it often went to church and social functions.

There were two regular models. The smaller, with two seats as regular equipment, was generally drawn by one horse; the larger model with three seats by a team. The vehicle got its name soon after it appeared, way back when. With seats easily taken out, the platform made an excellent speaker’s rostrum which could be used at street corners, parks, or whenever convenient, and could easily be whisked away to greet another audience.

In eastern states, it was used for about everything, from furnishing transportation to sleeping quarters. Democrats used it in campaigning and thus provided its name. De luxe models appeared at times; some even had small hard rubber tires.
