From Aug 21, 1914

The following resolution has been adopted by the Board of Supervisors of the town of Blue Mounds: Be it resolved by the Board of Supervisors of the Town of Blue Mounds, Pope County, Minnesota, that on account of the prevalence of hog cholera and for the purpose of checking the spread of said disease, the running of hunting dogs at large within said town is hereby prohibited from the date of this resolution until the first day of March 1915. Any person or persons violating this resolution will be punished by a fine of $25 or by imprisonment for 30 days. John Holveson, Chairman of the Board.

Dr. and Mrs. C.R. Christensen returned from their trip to Norway Wednesday.

A large party from Starbuck and the surrounding country went to Glenwood in automobiles to meet the genial doctor and his good wife. Eleven autos gathered on main street. A.G. Fossen with his Overland declared with Starbuck banners led the procession to the Soo depot. Dr. and Mrs. Christensen were given a hearty reception when they stepped from the train. They were bundled into Mr. Fossen’s automobile and the procession returned to Starbuck where a program was held in the Square.

At the present time we have some big watermelons, the kind with the big, red, juicy hearts. You can take one home or enjoy a slice at our lunch counter. 100 YEARS AGO

From Aug. 8, 1924

Six young men from Starbuck left last Thursday to attend the Citizen’s Military Training camp at Fort Snelling. This camp is held for one month every year for the physical and military training of young men and all expenses are paid by the government. Only three attended last year and they were from Starbuck. Six attended this year, also all from Starbuck. They are Irving Byhre, Clarence Nelson, Harold Walters, Irving Stenson, Alex Forde and Delos Hendrickson.

A special meeting will be held in Dist. 45 on Aug. 15, to decide the length of the school term, in months, to be held in the District for the coming school year, 1924-25.

The Villard State Bank was robbed between the hours of 2 and 4 o’clock Thursday morning by a gang of seven burglars. All telephone and telegraph wires had been cut and the burglars fired their guns occasionally to keep the people off the street after the burglar alarm went off. They took two hours to do the job and no one noticed which direction they went when they left. The robbers secured about $9,000 in cash and securities.

90 YEARS AGO

From Aug. 23, 1934

A crew of men have been busy the past week tarring Highway 28, beginning in Starbuck and working west. A stretch south of Highway 29 was tarred on Monday afternoon, continuing past the intersection of the highways to the water tower on the north. The road between here and Glenwood will only be tarred in patches.

A.T. Sanvik, who has been acting postmaster of the local office since last September, received official notice of his appointment as postmaster from Washington last week. The appointment had been confirmed by the President on June 13, 1934.

Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Peterson and their guests, Mr. and Mrs. B.C. Ness of Mahnomen motored to Minneapolis on Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Ness is a sister of Mrs. Peterson.

Every now and then Starbuck is visited by a chimney sweeper, but the one that came here Monday was in a class by himself. While cleaning the chimney on the Drug Store he started to yodel, and before long he attracted quite an audience who enjoyed to hear the tall hatted brusher demonstrate his voice.

Mr. and Mrs. H.L. Gorder and Claremont, Mr. and Mrs. George Femrite and sons helped Mrs. Harold Gorder celebrate her birthday Monday evening.

Misses Ruth Brenden, Jeanette Ingvarson, Elmer Alberg and Ralph Anderson enjoyed a picnic supper at Sandy Point Friday evening.

Thursday evening Gladys Ness entertained a group of friends in honor of Miss Evelyn Ross of Sacramento, California. Among those present were Mrs. Peterson, Misses Evelyn Ross, Helen Engebretson, Edith Brevig, Violet Wesen, Winona Jorgenson, Mrs. Chester Peterson and Irving Helgeson. Miss Ross lives with Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Case and their many friends here in Starbuck will be happy to know they are in good health and Mr. Case is busily engaged in the hardware business. The evening was thoroughly enjoyed reminiscing over old times.

In spite of the heat, businessmen have been in the field helping shock grain.

Funeral services for Mrs. B.O. Smedstad, 62, were held at the Indherred Lutheran Church on August 3. She is survived by the following children: Odell of Starbuck, Mrs. Joseph Kleber (Myrtle) of Cold Spring, Maxwell of Hoffman, Lt. Raymond in the U.S. Navy, Edmund of Minneapolis, Franklin of Starbuck, Sgt. Vernon with the U.S. Army and Gladys of Starbuck.

Mr. and Mrs. Arthur J. Olson (Vivian Aslagson) are the parents of a baby boy born Friday, August 4. Mother and baby are doing fine at the hospital in Ortonville.

Funeral services for Christian Rorvig, 86, were held at the Fron Lutheran Church on August 4. He is survived by the following children: Mrs. Alfred (Clara) Wrolson of Cyrus, Mrs. Nels (Oline) Stenson of Starbuck, Mrs. Anton (Emma) Mickelson and Mrs. Alfred (Severina) Mickelson of Hancock, Martin and Casper of Farwell and Leo of Glenwood.

From Aug. 12, 1954

The Starbuck Fur and Iron Company is presently moving from its location on South Highway 29 to the new yard being constructed on the extreme edge of town. Gerhard G. Landmark and his son, Lloyd Landmark are the owners of the business.

The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Arne Klyve was baptized Allen Dale Klyve after the services Sunday at Chippewa Falls Lutheran Church. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Palmer Arness and Mr. and Mrs. Magnus Lehaken.

Helen Berg and Donald Wiggens were married July 3 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Funeral services for Olaf J. Wollan, 43, were held at Indherred Lutheran Church on July 31. He is survived by the following brothers and sisters: Norma Floyd of Glenwood, Ruth Stewart, Bernard Wollan, Margot, Allen and Arnold Wollan, all of Starbuck.

Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Chalenburg are the parents of a baby girl born August 4 in Germany.

Miss Frances Larson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Larson and Orvald Moen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Moen, all of Starbuck were married July 18 at Fron Lutheran Church. The couple are at home on a farm south of Starbuck.

Donna Marlene, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Forbord was baptized at East Zion Lutheran Church Sunday. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Adlore Forbord, Esther Greene and Larry Greene (by proxy),

John Samuelson, son of Mr. and Mrs. L.M. Samuelson has been accepted at the North Dakota State College at Fargo and will enter the College of Pharmacy.

Roger Shelstad, who served as senior high principal at the Starbuck school these past years and resigned that post in May has accepted a position at the Renville School system. He will assume his new duties as Junior and Senior high principal on August 1st.

Herman Rosholt receives a conservation award in special ceremonies at Syracuse, NY.

Mr. and Mrs. Delbert E. Anderson announce the engagement of their daughter, Rosann to Neil Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Orville Anderson of Rockwell City, Iowa. A December wedding is being planned. Rosann is an English and French Teacher in the Rockwell City High School. Neil is farming near Rockwell City.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Stammer announce the engagement of their daughter, Roberta Lynn to Douglas Kenneth Kuhnau, Farwell, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Kuhnau, Sr. An October 12th wedding is planned.

Small grain harvest in full swing. The annual fall harvesting of small grains was well underway last week as many fields of oats, wheat and barley were being swathed and combined by area farmers. The quality of the harvest was reported to be “average” as poor conditions existed when weed control efforts were made earlier in the growing season. A spotty, but welcomed rain fell last weekend alleviating the growing concern for moisture needed for the row crops.

The Annual Pope County 4-H Fashion Revue was held Tuesday, July 31 at the Starbuck High School. 4-Hers chose the theme “Step Up to Fashion” for their revue. Dresses and skirts were by far the most popular fashion for 1984.

Janet Thompson, a 16-year-old 4-H’er from the Cyrus Boosters 4-H club won double honors by being selected Overall Grand Champion in Clothing Construction and Advanced Champion in the Clothes You Make division of the Fashion Revue. Janet will be representing Pope County at the Minnesota State Fair for Fashion Revue.

Greg Larson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Larson was named to the Honor Roll for the fourth quarter at the Minnesota State Academy School for the Deaf.

Maren (Erdbrugger) Kotting of Kappeln, Germany, returned to the United States recently and visited Jim and Eloise Totushek, her host family while she attended school in Starbuck 25 years ago.

Funeral services for Julian Pederson, 87, were held at East Zion Lutheran Church August 13. He is survived by his wife, Ada, and the following children: Betty and Curtis Nordaune of Montevideo, Roger and Joyce Pederson of Starbuck, Jerry and Sue Pederson of Hawley, Sharon and Gary Boldenow of Fergus Falls, Philip and Pat Pederson of Sauk Rapids, Dianne and Lynn Peterson of Willmar, Jeanne and Paul Pladson of Richfield, Flo and Mike Kallenbach of Maddock, ND, and Harvey and Dianne Pederson of Starbuck.

Byron Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Anderson of Starbuck received an invitation in 1993 from Norway to teach physics there. Byron with his wife, Kris and three children, Bjorn, Kari and Eric left for Stavanger, Norway where they have lived for one year and Byron has consented to stay there for another year.

Nearly 100 people gathered in front of the Minnewaska District Hospital and Minnewaska Medical Clinic facility Monday morning to voice and demonstrate their opposition to a possible merger of the county’s two hospitals and the suspension of physician assistant Greg Rapp on Friday. About 70 people gathered in the facility’s administrative offices Friday after learning of Rapp’s suspension.

Three young adults, ready to tackle their future, have spent three months in Starbuck soaking up the reality of the day-to-day tasks of the medical field. Jacob Bryce, Brittany Tostenson and Ryan Carlson have dedicated their summer to internships within the Minnewaska Regional Health System.

Rainbows and Rhymes Nursery School has been operating in Starbuck for 17 years. Rainbows and Rhymes is a parent-cooperative nursery school that provides opportunities for your child’s educational, emotional, physical and intellectual development. Applications are now being accepted for the 2004-05 year.

The 7th Annual Starbuck Dragon Boat races took place Aug. 8-9 at Starbuck City Park. The event kicked off with a dinner on Friday evening and the parade of teams and dragon boat racing on Saturday. First Security Bank, of Benson, won the Gold Division First Place trophy.

Brady Carter (Senior), Sydney Blair (Intermediate) and Jamison Reed (Junior) earned the highest honors in the 4-H Round Robin showmanship competition at the Pope County Fair as 2014 Round Robin Champions. Round Robin is a unique competition in that it puts contestants’ showmanship skills to the test by having them show a wide variety of animals, not just the ones with which they’re familiar. Reserve Round Robin Champions were Ashton Dingman (Junior), Colin Weidauer (Intermediate) and Taylor Lundebrek (Senior).

The Starbuck City Council unanimously approved adding a new radar gun to the Police Department Inventory. TZD (Toward Zero Deaths) Law Enforcement Liaison Tom Kummrow of the Office of Traffic Safety. Kummrow said he was in Starbuck 10 to 12 years ago when he presented an in car video camera to the police department. Kummrow said he is a retired cop who worked with two of Starbuck previous chiefs. Kummrow introduced Bob Tirevold who is going to take his place. Bob is retired from the military, and is currently the Police Chief in Cyrus.
