The Minnewaska Area girls tennis team went 2-1 at the Alexandria quadrangular, Friday, Aug. 23.  The Lakers improved to 3-3 overall with the two victories.

Minnewaska Area, which went 12-7 overall last year and 8-0 in the WCC to win a ninth-straight league title, were also set to host Montevideo last Monday night and play at MACCRAY, Thursday.

The match with Montevideo was rained out and has yet to be rescheduled, while a recap of the MACCRAY match will be highlighted next week.

Also coming up is a match at home against Sauk Centre, Thursday, Sept. 5, and the Pine City quadrangular, set for Saturday, Sept. 7.

Through the early part of the season, Megan Thorfinnson and Olivia Danielson lead the Lakers with 9-1 records, while Rachel Rankin is 8-2 and Alia Randt is 7-3.

Back to coach the Lakers again this year is Tara Reichmann, who is coaching her 25th season of girls tennis.  She is 365-155 overall coaching girls tennis and 162-133 coaching boys for an overall record of 527-288.

•  Minnewaska Area was 8-0 in the WCC last year, while Montevideo placed second with a 6-2 record, followed by Morris Area-CA/WCA (5-3), Benson-KMS (4-4), MACCRAY (4-4), Melrose Area (4-4), LQP-DB (2-6), Sauk Centre (2-6) and YME (0-8).

The Lakers went 2-1 at the Alexandria quadrangular, Friday, Aug. 23, a meet that was added late to the schedule.

Minnewaska Area beat Foley (5-2) and Alexandria (4-3) in two of the matches while also losing a close contest against Minneapolis Washburn, 5-2.

Olivia Danielson was the only Laker to go 3-0, playing at third singles and second doubles.

During the win over Foley, Alia Randt (6-1, 6-1), Megan Thorfinnson (6-0, 6-1), Olivia Danielson (7-6 (8-6), 6-1) and Rachel Rankin (6-1, 6-1) swept the singles’ matches for Lakers while McKenna Uhde and Katie Sorenson also won at second doubles (4-6, 6-4, 10-7 tiebreaker).

•  The Lakers also swept the four singles’ matches against Alexandria while also losing the three doubles’ matches in straight sets.

Winning at first through fourth singles, respectively, were Randt (6-4, 6-2), Thorfinnson (6-2, 6-1), Danielson (6-0, 6-0) and Rankin (6-3, 6-2).

•  In the final match, a 5-2 loss to Mpls. Washburn, the Lakers went with a “strong doubles” lineup and it almost worked out as Danielson and Avarie Uhde won 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 at second doubles and Katy Vold and Katie Sorenson prevailed 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 tiebreaker at third doubles for two points.

Minnewaska Area had its chances for the other two points as Randt and Thorfinnson fell 6-2, 4-6, 10-7 tiebreaker at first doubles, and McKenna Uhde lost a close match at fourth singles, 4-6, 6-2, 10-5 tiebreaker.
