Glenwood to vote for mayor in next election
Oct. 1, 1964 – Preliminary surveys for the Glenwood Cable Television System were completed by a Phoenix, Ariz., company. The surveys were delivered to KCMT television in Alexandria, which held the franchise for the Glenwood company. The survey showed that 12.5 miles of coaxial cable, as well as other equipment items, would be required to provide Glenwood with cable TV.
The 103rd annual convocation of the grand chapter of the Royal Arch Masons was set to open in Glenwood. Presiding over the event was Harold Eastland of Glenwood who had served as Minnesota Grand High Priest. Over 200 masons and their wives, as well as dignitaries from other states, were expected to attend.
Glenwood lost its first dual cross country meet to Osakis. The Lakers, a young and inexperienced team, included Bob Holtberg, David Wildman, Bob Koob and Gary Overgaard.
Oct. 3, 1974 – Winners of the Our Little Miss and Miss LaPetite competition in Glenwood were Mary Hegna as Our Little Miss, with Marci Brandt, Sherri Oldon and Jackie Thoennes as runners up and Sara Larson as Miss LaPetite, with Kirsten Martinson and Tammy Griffin as runners up.
The hospital picture in Pope County was becoming no clearer even though attempts continued. In one development Reno Township sought to withdraw from the Glacial Ridge Hospital District and was turned down. Discussion of remodeling at the Glenwood Hospital continued, and members of the Western Pope County Hospital District and the Glacial Ridge District met with the Central Minnesota Healthcare Planning Commission to discuss the status of each certificate of need.
Among the winners at the annual 4-H Achievement Award banquet were Linda Braaten, Carmen Oeltjen, Denise Hermanson, Brian Jackson, Mary Thompson, Kevin Caskey, Gordy Moen, Kim Bannister, Ed Blair, Kathy Brice, Alan Bryce, Jim Bennett, Paul Freeman, Dawn Pladson, Dan Larson, Nancy Cihlar, Steve Larson, Karen Forbord, Lori Amundson and the Pleasant Hill Troopers and Ben Wade Blazers, as well as others.
Oct. 4, 1984 – What should be done about all the water? That was the question in the minds of many county farmers and landowners who owned land on lakes considered to have high water by the Department of Natural Resources. Several smaller lakes in the county had shorelines which had been battered by high water levels.
The Glenwood City Commission approved a plan by TCI to upgrade its cable TV system to 21 channels in the city. “Our first concern is the continuity of the channels we have, not just more channels,” said Mayor Don Schaub.
Shari Paulson and Tony Torgerson were named king and queen of Glenwood’s annual Homecoming. Other royalty included Steve Jore, Lori Howe, Brad Kollman, Mary McIver, Lisa Heidecker, Karl Terhaar, Rhonda Tostenson and Chris Conley.
Oct. 3, 1994 – The 16th annual fiddlers contest was held at the Terrace Mill. Pictured in the Tribune was Frank Kroupa of Farwell, the oldest fiddler in the contest at the age of 85. In addition to the fiddling contest, people also viewed booths of festival merchandise.
Shaun Crumb and Jacob Lang, members of Glenwood Boy Scout Troop No. 423, were pictured in the Tribune receiving the Eagle Scout award during a special program on Sept. 25, at Glenwood Lutheran Church. Also pictured were the boys’ parents, Randy and Judi Crumb and Jean and Larry Lang, and Scoutmaster Kim Gugisberg.
Pictured in the Tribune were four sets of twins, all in Jane Bartlett’s kindergarten class at Starbuck Elementary School. They were Chad and Ryan Gregersen, sons of David and Mona Gregersen; Aaron and Sara Gregersen, son and daughter of Steve and Judy Gregersen; Carrie and Jennifer Rasmussen, daughters of Ken and Pam Rasmussen; and Cortney and Brittany Moen, daughters of Mike and Ruth Moen.
Sept. 27, 2004 – Taylor Hill and Kayla Noyes became the 2004-2005 Minnewaska Area High School Homecoming king and queen on Saturday at the school’s 14th annual Homecoming coronation. The two would reign over homecoming activities during the week, ranging from the elementary school tour on Friday to the wacky tradition of the powder puff football game Friday.
Nearly 80-degree temperatures made the 26th annual Terrace Mill Fiddlers’ Contest one of the most pleasant ever in terms of viewer comfort. Instead of sweatshirts and jackets, as is often the case, shorts and short-sleeved shirts were the uniforms for the day, as hundreds came to hear people of all ages play their fiddles on the stage at the Terrace Mill.
Sept. 29, 2014 – Glenwood voters would choose Nov. 4, which one of the three candidates would serve as Mayor of Glenwood for the next four years. The candidates were William (Bill) Ogdahl, current mayor of Glenwood, and challengers Shannon Bodeker and Scott Formo, Sr. The candidates were to face each other in a “Meet the Candidates” debate.
The Glenwood Rotary Club provided each third-grader at Minnewaska Area Elementary School with a dictionary through its efforts to promote literacy among youth. This year Rotary provided nearly 130 dictionaries to students. The club would also be giving dictionaries to each third-grade student at Glacial Hills Elementary School in Starbuck.
Jon Oeltjen represented Pope County 4-H at the 2014 Minnesota State 4-H Horse Show, held Sept. 12-15 at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds in St. Paul. Oeltjen and his horse, Molta Bella, competed in the English events of Hunt Seat English Pleasure, Hunt Seat English Equitation and Showmanship.
The girls of Minnewaska sports had a banner week. The swimming and diving team topped Holdingford on Tuesday. The tennis team continued to blank their opponents and had climbed into the top 10 of the state rankings. The volleyball team had recorded their first and second West Central Conference wins of the season, beating both BOLD and Benson at home.
