• Lakers win 5-of-7 WCC individual titles

The Minnewaska Area girls tennis team closed out the regular-season last week with a 7-0 win over Morris Area-WCA last Tuesday at home and at the WCC Individual Tourney at Alexandria, Saturday.

The Lakers closed out the regular-season with a 17-3 overall record, which included a perfect 8-0 record in the WCC to win a 10th-straight conference title.

Montevideo was second with a 7-1 record, followed by LQP-DB (6-2), Benson-KMS (5-3), Morris Area-WCA (4-4), YME (3-5), Melrose Area and Sauk Centre (both 2-6) and MACCRAY (0-8).

The Section 6A Team Tournament begins this week and the Lakers should be a first or second seed.  Either way, the Lakers would host a quarterfinal match, Thursday, Oct. 3.

Litchfield and Osakis could also contend for the top seed, while the other teams in the section include BBE, Long Prairie-GE-USA, Melrose Area, NLS, Sauk Centre and St. John’s Prep.

The semifinals and championship are slated for Tuesday, Oct. 8 at Rogers.  The Section 6A Individual Tourney is set for Oct. 11 and 17 at Rogers.

The top records for the Lakers this year going into the section tourney are Olivia Danielson (25-2) and Rachel Rankin (25-2),  but four others have 22-5 records (Megan Thorfinnson, Addy Heid, Katy Vold and Avarie Uhde), one is 20-7 (Alia Randt) and two others have 19 wins (Katie Sorenson and McKenna Uhde).

Waska 7, Morris Area 0

The Lakers clinched their 10th-straight WCC title with a 7-0 win at Morris Area-WCA last Tuesday night.  Minnewaska did not give up any sets and improved to 17-3 overall and 10-0 in the conference with the win.

Alia Randt (6-0, 6-1), Megan Thorfinnson (6-2, 3-6, 6-0), Olivia Danielson (6-0, 6-1) and Kaylen Blair (6-1, 6-2) swept first through fourth singles, respectively, while the Lakers also earned three easy wins in doubles.

Avarie Uhde and Rachel Rankin earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at first doubles, Katy Vold and Addy Heidi prevailed 6-2, 6-3 at second doubles, and Katie Sorenson and McKenna Uhde gave up just one game in winning 6-1, 6-0 at third doubles.

WCC Individual Tourney

The Lakers competed at the WCC Individual Tourney, Saturday at Alexandria, winning five of the seven individual titles.  Minnewaska Area also won the team title earlier this fall with a perfect 8-0 record.

Winning WCC championships with 3-0 records were Megan Thorfinnson at second singles, Olivia Danielson at third singles, Avarie Uhde-Rachel Rankin at first doubles, Katy Vold-Addy Heid at second doubles, and Katie Sorenson-McKenna Uhde at third doubles.

In addition, Alia Randt went 2-1 at first singles to earn second and Kaylen Blair was 2-1 at fourth singles to also place third.

Winning first singles was Brook Lindeman of Montevideo and winning fourth singles was Carlee Axford of Montevideo.
