Speaking of Sports

The Minnewaska Area Lakers have started the fall sports season off with a bang!  I had one of those weeks last week that I thoroughly enjoy.  I had the opportunity to see five of the fall sports teams in action as the 2024-25 school year got off to a start at MAHS.

On Tuesday, I was able to watch the volleyball home opener against Sauk Centre.  The Lakers played great and took a strong Mainstreeter team to five games before losing a tight match.  What a great way to start the season!

Two days later, I watched the girls tennis team host Sauk Centre in the season opener, a 7-0 Laker victory.  It appears the Lakers might be headed toward their 10th-straight WCC girls tennis title.

Friday night was the home opener for football and the Lakers showed they could be a forced to be reckoned with during the 2024 football season by beating the visiting SC Mainstreeters, 34-13.

On Saturday, I journeyed up to the school for a soccer match.  I got there at 11:30 a.m., expecting the varsity to be playing, but instead, I was able to watch the first half of the JV game before coming back up later in the afternoon for the first half of the varsity game. Yes, those are the kind of weeks I really enjoy.

•  One big day coming up that you won’t want to miss (make sure to wear some good walking shoes) is Tuesday, Sept. 17.  On that day, the Laker volleyball, girls tennis and boys soccer teams are set to host competitions at home, and the Gator swimming and diving team is also set to host a meet at the MAHS pool that evening.  My wife and I plan on taking care of two of my grandkids that week so we’ll see how many of the Tuesday events my 3-year old granddaughter can handle before she gets tired.

•  On a separate sidenote, this is the first week of the PCT football contest, which can be found on page 3B.  Give it a try this year.

•  And, one final thing, here’s a note for the students and staff at MAHS to enjoy 2024 Homecoming.  It comes early this year, but it’s always fun.  Go Lakers!
