From Sept. 11, 1914
E.H. Dahl, Hjalmer Berg, Wm. Holten, O.C. Anderson, H.R. Dahl and Mike Wicks went out Monday morning and brought in 42 chicks and seven ducks. This is the biggest haul reported by any parties from this village.
Auction, Monday, September 14 at 10 a.m. at Hotel Minnewaska. Tables and bed linens, beds, chairs, dishes, rugs, stoves and other household goods. Ben Signalness, auctioneer.
Wedding bells will soon be ringing in west New Prairie.

Lewis Ronnie died at the home of his brother, Hans Ronnie, of New Prairie on Wednesday evening. Funeral services will be held Saturday at the St. John’s church. For many years Mr. Ronnie held the office of assessor in his township. Survivors are his widow and three brothers-Ole, Sjur and Hans of New Prairie.
A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. L.E. Finstad last Friday.
The W.B.L. Farmers Club will meet at the Strandness home on Thursday evening, September 10. The Lowry Band will furnish music, and Rev. Benedict of Glenwood will speak.
The Main streets of the village have been sprinkled with calcium chloride to lay the dust. It is claimed that if the street is sprinkled two or three times a year with this salt, there will be no dust and that it has a tendency to bind the gravel so it does not become so loose.
Rev. Eugene Aal left for his parish at Campbell, Nebr., after spending a week visiting relatives here. Rev. Aal has the congregation at Campbell, a town of 1200 people, and a smaller congregation where he preaches every third Sunday.
A parcel shower was given in honor of Miss Lillian Hansen at the Sam H. Olson home on Friday Evening. Miss Hansen was married Saturday to Oscar Nelson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Nelson of Langhei, Rev. K. Palmer performed the ceremony.

Miss Luverne Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Johnson of Starbuck, and Milton Brendin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Nathin Brendin of Glenwood, were married at Minneapolis on Friday, August 31.
Five hundred Kensington people and rural route patrons gathered in the village hall Tuesday evening as a protest against the removal of Postmaster Erickson, a disabled war veteran, and the appointment of a new postmaster. Speeches were made by Rev. Carlson, Rev. Holmes, Mr. Osterberg and a number of other businessmen and farmers.
Sheriff Ness stated on Wednesday that the county jail was empty for the first time in a long time.
There are 754 active cases in Pope County, a total of 3514 persons on the relief, app. 25.3% of the population of the County, according to the Emergency Relief News.
Ole Bardahl went to Minneapolis on Friday where he will collect tickets at the State Fair during the week.
A baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Palmer Opdahl on August 30.
The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Dokken was baptized at the East Zion Church on Sept. 2 by Rev. K.R. Palmer, receiving the name Stanley Duwayne.

Miss Orena Wiger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Obid Wiger of Cyrus and Rev. Floyd Lien of Park River, ND were married on August 20 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cyrus. The couple will make their home in Iowa.
Michael Gorder, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Gorder, celebrated his first birthday Friday afternoon.
Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Baukol had their infant daughter, Gail Frances, baptized at the Immanuel Church Sunday. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Clarmont Brenden, Beatrice Evjen and Magnus Baukol.
Mr. and Mrs. I.H. Helgeson entertained a number of relatives and friends in honor of Byron’s 6th birthday Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Larson (June Smedstad) of Thief River Falls are the parents of a son born Sept. 3.
Funeral services for Mrs. Tollef Syverson, 71, were held at West Zion Lutheran Church Sept. 6. She is survived by one son, Maurice and two daughters, Mrs. J.C. (Alice) Bilodeau, both of Minneapolis and Mrs. Glenmore (Theresa) Larson of Starbuck.
The Hanson Photo Studio is now open for business. Now is the time to have portraits made for Christmas. We are located 1/2 block east of Minnewaska hospital.
Funeral services for Mrs. George Jergenson, 58, were held at Chippewa Falls Lutheran Church Sept. 2. She is survived by her husband and the following children: Elmer of Starbuck, Francis of Sedan, Mrs. Arnold (Doris) Lagred of Sedan, Esther (Mrs. Odin) Tharaldson of Starbuck, Grace (Mrs. Howard) Nelson of Glenwood, Glen and Ione at home.

Thomas Pederson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Pederson, has been named to the Dean’s List for the second semester at Augsburg College.
Jean Marie Dokken, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Dokken of Benson and Dean Glen Anderson of Murdock were married at East Zion Lutheran Church Saturday, June 29. The couple will make their home in Warren, MN.
Judy Nordly of Graceville and Robert Ophaug, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Ophaug of Starbuck were married June 27 at Siloah Lutheran Church in Graceville. They will make their home in Minneapolis.
The following were confirmed at the two Cyrus Lutheran Churches Sunday: Susan Anderson, David Bratton, Steve Berg, Robert Gunvaldson, Dennis Lindor, Bruce Olson, Rose Pederson, Julie Stettner, Bruce Solvie, Jere Solvie and Roger Veum.
Miss Mary Alice Peder-son, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.O. Pederson and Paul Bardal, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ole Bardal, were married at the Fron Lutheran Church Saturday evening, August 22. The couple are now at home in Minneapolis.

Mervin Solberg, a local Ford dealer for many years dies; funeral rites Friday.
Mary Thompson is the grand champion exhibitor Minnesota State Fair.
The North Dakota State School of Science has made it known this week that Wesley Klaahsen has been added to their faculty. He will be an instructor in refrigerator technology. A Minnesota native, Klaahsen comes from Starbuck where he was employed in the refrigeration field for the past three years.
Jay Hedlund is the only new member of the elementary section of the Starbuck school. He will be the reading specialist for the younger students. Hedlund graduated from the Univ. of Minnesota, Morris last spring and for the past two years, was an assistant wrestling coach there. He is a native of St. Paul, married and they are currently living in the Hazel Palmer home.
No jackpot winner on Tuesday; drawing next week for $100.00. The name of Mrs. Paul Billehus was called: She had been in town earlier but forgot about the drawing. She will receive the usual $5.00 consolation money. As a result, next week’s drawing will be for $100.00.

Total enrollment of 420 students this year shows a decrease of one student from last year. The Cyrus school shows a decrease of two students from last year’s enrollment from 190 to 177 this year.
Anne Smith of Charlottesville, VA and Rob Pederson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pederson of Starbuck were married at the Jefferson Park Avenue Baptist Church in Charlottesville in April. The couple will make their home in Earlysville, VA.
Delvin Ellefson resigns his position as clerk of New Prairie township at the regular monthly meeting of the town board Sept. 3. Ellefson was elected to the position in March by defeating the incumbent, Nancy Barsness, by one vote. Barsness volunteered to fill in as acting clerk until a new clerk is appointed by the supervisors.
Becky Rae, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Beveridge, and Gregory Swartz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Swartz, were married August 24.

Funeral services for Arnold Lundebrek, 66, were held at East Zion Lutheran Church Sept. 2. He is survived by his wife, Carol and one son, Brian.
Several friends helped Jordan Anderson, son of Judy Anderson, celebrate his 6th birthday Saturday.
Adam Logan, son of Dale and Vicky Logan was one of 1,000 elementary and secondary students honored by the Minnesota Academic Excellence Foundation at the Gathering of Champions ceremony held recently at the Minnesota State Fair. The students were recognized for their academic accomplishments.
Funeral services for Kaius Norby, 69, were held at Grace Lutheran Church in South St. Paul Sept. 3. He is survived by his wife, Florence, six stepchildren, seven brothers and seven sisters.

According to Glacial Lakes State Park manager Melody Webb, the park’s campground will remain open after Labor Day for rustic camping through the fall, winter and early spring season. Department of Natural Resources Northwest Regional Parks manager John Winters had indicated that the DNR would close the park’s campground after the Sept. 6 Labor Day weekend due to budget constraints. The announcement comes as victorious relief for a local group of people who fought to keep camping open at the park.
With concerns of surface water runoff, access lot management and more traffic, some residents along the north shore of Lake Minnewaska told Pope County Commissioners, not in my backyard. Potential second-tier development near Starbuck along the lake’s north shore met resistance during the preliminary plat hearing for the North Shore Villas development.
Local restaurants are teaming up with community members, the MAS school board and district staff to distribute information on the upcoming referendum vote, as well as raising funds to cover campaign expenses. The kickoff events will be held at the Pizza Ranch in Glenwood, Dave’s Place in Starbuck, The Hatchery Bar and Grill in Lowry, The Office Bar in Villard and Bob’s Place in Sedan. The restaurants will contribute 15 percent of sales during the four-hour events to the community group CORE (Children, Our Responsibility to Educate). No district dollars will be used for this event.

The program will be held at the MAHS auditorium on Monday, Sept. 15. Starbuck got heavy rains early Wednesday afternoon that led to flooding on a few streets. The water nearly reached the doors of the fire hall on 5th Street. According to the Starbuck Fire Department, several manhole covers in town had to be replaced after being blown open by the water pressure.
The Lowry Fire Department’s Annual Dinner at the Lowry Fire Hall brought in 350 people on Wednesday, Sept. 3.
