The Minnewaska Area girls tennis team earned a pair of conference sweeps last week to raise its season record to 5-3. The Lakers, who were 12-7 last season, including an 8-0 mark in the WCC, won by a shutout over MACCRAY last Tuesday night and against Sauk Centre, Thursday night at home.
The Lakers, who have won nine-straight WCC titles, were also set to compete at the Pine City quadrangular, Saturday, but results of that meet will be highlighted next week.
Minnewaska Area did go 3-0 at Pine City with two 4-3 victories.
Coming up this week is another three-meet week as the Lakers are set to play at Osakis, Monday, at YME, Tuesday, and at home against Melrose Area, Thursday, Sept. 12.
Three Lakers already have double-digit wins as Megan Thorfinnson and Olivia Danielson were both 11-1 going into the Pine City meet and Rachel Rankin was 10-2.
• Minnewaska Area was 8-0 in the WCC last year, while Montevideo placed second with a 6-2 record, followed by Morris Area-CA/WCA (5-3), Benson-KMS (4-4), MACCRAY (4-4), Melrose Area (4-4), LQP-DB (2-6), Sauk Centre (2-6) and YME (0-8).

The Lakers swept MACCRAY in a WCC matchup last Tuesday at Sauk Centre. The match had been set for the previous Thursday night at Clara City, but had to be rescheduled because of rain and MACCRAY and Sauk Centre were already set to meet that day so the Lakers joined in.
Alia Randt led the sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 win at first singles, while Megan Thorfinnson prevailed 6-1, 6-0 at second singles, Olivia Danielson won 6-1, 6-0 at third singles and Kaylen Blair earned a 6-1, 6-3 victory at fourth singles.
Minnewaska gave up only two games in the three doubles’ matches as Katy Vold and Avarie Uhde won 6-2, 6-0 at first doubles, and the teams of Rachel Rankin-Addy Heid and Katie Sorenson-McKenna Uhde both won in 6-0, 6-0 shutouts at second and third doubles, respectively.
