The Minnewaska Area cross-country teams closed out the regular season with two meets last week at home last Tuesday and at the Perham Invitational, Thursday.

Next up is the WCC Meet, set for Tuesday (tomorrow) at Melrose followed by the Section 6A Cross-Country Meet at Wadena-DC, Thursday, Oct. 24.

The Lakers girls placed first of five teams at the home meet and ninth of 23 full teams at the Perham Invitational, while the Laker boys were third at home and 14th of 22 teams at Perham.

Minnewaska Invitational

The Minnewaska Area girls cross-country team dominated its home invitational last Tuesday, placing all seven of its varsity members in the top 11.

Jillian Deutsch and Nori Song went one-two to lead the Lakers to the team title with 21 points, while Sauk Centre was a distant second with 75 points.

Deutsch had a time of 20:51 to win the 32-runner field, while Song was second with a time of 20:54.

In addition, Maia Larson placed fourth (21:02), Piper Citrowske-Lee was fifth (21:04), Sydney Ankeny was ninth (21:36), Ella Larson placed 10th (21:38) and Lauryn Ankeny was 11th (21:58.

•  In the boys race, Jacob Drevlow continued his domination of area competition by winning the individual race for the Mainstreeters in 16:39.

Sauk Centre had three of the top four racers on the way to winning the meet with 24 points, while Melrose was second with 68 and the Lakers were third with 70 points.

The Lakers finished third by four-tenths of a second as Minnewaska’s fifth runner ran a time of 20:03.2 and Melrose’ fifth racer had a time of 20:02.8.

Zach Palmer led the Lakers with a time of 17:52 to place sixth overall out of 35 racers, while Ian Mils was eighth with a time of 18:13.

Luke Hoffmann was next in 13th (18:51), followed by Dietrich Reidenbach in 17th (19:20), Rylan Tank in 26th (20:03), Carter Dinsmore in 28th place (20:15) and Jase Ritter in 31st (20:55).

•  Sophia Wallin placed first and Aubrey Stark was second in the girls JV race of 5,000 meters.  Wallin had a time of 22:59 to win by over a minute, while Stark was second with a time of 24:11 and Grace Herfindahl earned 10th with a time of 29:15.

Ryan Koehntop placed ninth overall for the Laker JV boys with a time of 21:14, while Tayte Wasilowski was 24th (22:52) and Chase Wacker placed 30th (24:07).  Winning the race was Sauk Centre’s Evan Peterson in 18:33.

•  Minnewaska Area runners placed second through fourth during the 2,500 meter boys junior high race won by Abe Frieler, of Melrose, in 8:58.  Placing second for the Lakers was Caden Hawkins (9:10), followed by Ilo Hasskamp in third (9:37) and Colton Watson-Essary in fourth (9:43).

In the girls junior high race, there were only five runners (no Lakers) in a race won by Melrose’ Kylie Baker in 9:44.

Perham Invitational

Competing against the strongest field of the season, the Laker girls placed ninth at the Perham Invitational with Lauryn Ankeny leading the way for the Lakers in 29th place overall with a time of 20:03.

Perham won the team title with 55 points, followed by Brainerd with 97 and Redwood Valley with 127.

Jillian Deutsch was second for the Lakers with a time of 20:36 to place 46th out of 164 total runners, while Piper Citrowske-Lee was 56th (21:00), Nori Song earned 57th (21:06), Maia Larson was 58th (21:07), Sydney Ankeny placed 74th (21:38) and Ella Larson earned 90th (22:31). 

Fergus Falls’ Cassie Wellman won the individual title with a time of 18:35 while two Redwood Valley runners were second and third.

•  In the boys race, Perham dominated with 39 points to win the team title and also had the individual titlist in Bjorn Anderson, who ran a time of 15:37 to beat out William Ahrens of Redwood Valley by 10 seconds.

Ian Mills paced the Lakers with a time of 17:25 to earn 42nd individually out of 165 racers and helped Minnewaska Area placed 14th out of 22 full teams.

Luke Hoffmann was next for the Lakers in 72nd place (18:28),  followed by Zach Palmer in 73rd (18:30), Deitrich Reidenbach in 92nd place (19:13), Carter Dinsmore in 113th (19:54), Rylan Tank in 114th (19:57) and Jase Ritter in 116th place (19:58).

All seven of the Lakers’ varsity runners finished under 20 minutes.

•  In the JV races, Sophia Wallin placed 19th (23:02), Aubrey Stark was 20th (23:06) and Grace Herfindahl was 104th (29:54) for the Laker girls in a race won by Perham’s Rory Kaldor (19:56), while in the JV boys race, Ryan Koehntop was 56th (20:06), Chase Wacker placed 136th (22:34) and Tayte Wasilowski was 159th (23:27) out of 202 runners in a race won by Perham’s Henry Mathiason in 17:03.

•  In the junior high races, Caden Hawkins placed 30th for the Lakers (12:51), Ilo Hasskamp was 44th (13:32) and Colton Watson-Essary placed 53rd (13:53) out of 161 runners in a race won by Perham’s Zeke Morris in 11:02.

•  There was also an elementary race and Oliver Citrowske-Lee placed 40th for the Lakers with a time of 7:46.  There were no Lakers in the girls junior high or elementary competitions.
