Speaking of Sports

What a great season of weather it’s been for football this fall.  I can’t remember any time in the last 35-40 years where there hasn’t been at least one rainy or snowy night for football.  I know there could be a few more weeks of football left and the weather could change, but hopefully, I didn’t jinx anyone.

I’m really looking forward to this week.  The Laker football team is set to host NLS for a rare Saturday afternoon game at 2 p.m. on the home field.  It should be a very good game between two evenly-matched teams with the winner moving on to play Albany for the Section 6AAA title, Friday, Nov. 1 at Rocori.

•  The volleyball team is also set to host a first-round playoff match, Wednesday, Oct. 23 versus Osakis.  The teams in Section 6AA are so evenly-matched that I wasn’t sure if the Lakers would be seeded fifth, sixth, seventh or even eighth until the final seedings were posted, Sunday.  If the Lakers win that match, they would play longtime nemesis, Sauk Centre, a team Minnewaska took to five games early in the season before losing a very close match at home.  The football and volleyball teams will have to get by Albany if they want to earn a state berth as the Huskies are the top seed in both tournaments.

•  Megan Thorfinnson and Alia Randt are set to compete at the State Girls Tennis Tournament, Thursday and Friday.  The Laker duo earned the third seed in the tournament and will begin action at 10 a.m., Thursday in Minneapolis.

•  The swimming and diving Gators are set to host the WCC Meet, Friday at UM-Morris.  Go Gators!

•  And, the Laker cross-country teams are set to compete at the Section 6A Cross-Country Meet, Thursday, Oct. 24 at Wadena-DC.  Both teams have a shot at sending individuals to state and the girls team has a legitimate shot at reaching state as a team.

Go Lakers!
