Glenwood City Commissioners last week approved a proclamation recognizing the 40th Anniversary of the Family Violence Prevention Services Act (FVPSA) and the 30th anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).  The GFWC Potpourri Club of Glenwood asked the city to recognize and honor the FVPSA with the proclamation.  In October 1984, the Family Violence Prevention and Services Act was signed into law.   Ten years later in 1994 the Violence Against Women Act was enacted to address congressional concerns about violent crime particularly crimes against women associated with domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking.  According to the proclamation the fundamental goals of the VAWA are to prevent violent crime, respond to the needs of victims, learn more about crime and change public attitudes through a collaborative effort by the criminal justice system, social service agencies, research organizations, schools, public health and private organizations.  Glenwood Mayor Sherri Kazda signed the proclamation after last Tuesday’s city commission meeting.  From left are Sandra Josephs, GFWC Potpourri President, Mayor Sherri Kazda, City Commissioners Neil Haynes, Brent Cochran, Todd Gylsen and Mavis Pattee.
