A group consisting of community volunteers, businesses, organizations under the guidance and assistance of the Pope County Historical Society are diligently working on a celebration in honor of the 100th Anniversary of the construction of the Glenwood Bandshell in the City Park.
Hours have been spent researching the history of the Bandshell, who was instrumental in uniting the community behind the project, and also the evolution of the background behind the need and importance the structure has provided for those years.
Much donated time has been spent tracing back to the late 1880’s and 90’s and following the development of the strong musical prowess of Pope County. Early bands and musical groups were of a plenty and their histories are important in understanding the driving forces that later produced not only the Bandshell but the development of the high school and grade music departments that exist today.
In coming editions, here in the Tribune, we will offer many examples of those who put their talents and efforts into the founding bands and organizations. The names of those that individually made so many contributions and leadership to music and its growth throughout the entire county will also be shared.
The groups that are participating are The Pope County Historical Society, the Pope County Tribune, KMGK 107.1 FM Radio, the Glenwood Welcome Center, as well as several other individuals. An updated list will be soon presented.
Mark the calendar for July 9
The Celebration will be held Wednesday July 9, 2025 at the Glenwood Bandshell in the City Park. Area musicians, musical groups, dignitaries and a short program will be provided. All families and area residents are invited to the free event.
“We would especially love to have descendants of the early Pope County families attend. There are many whose forefathers and mothers were responsible for making it possible 100 years ago and as far back as the 1880’s,” it was stated.
Look for coming articles and photos of those early years and the history of the Glenwood City Park and Bandshell in upcoming periodic Pope County Tribune issues.
