Fremad building in the hands of commissioners

Oct. 15, 1964 – Joyce Hoplin reigned over Glenwood High School’s homecoming festivities. She was crowned by football co-captain Bill Gilman and received a kiss from co-captain Mike Shea. Attendants were Beverly Walth, Linda Lyslo, Angela Rosten, Susan Knutson, Tracy Hicks and Vicki Krook. Escorts were Louis Austvold, Randy Swenson, Bob Holtberg and Ralph MacIver.

Five Starbuck FFA’ers attended the national FFA convention in Kansas City, Mo. They were Urness Larson Jr., Charles Branch, Richard Meyer, Dave Gregerson and Ronald Sundheim.

Open houses were scheduled at Glenwood’s Prospect Park Elementary School and at the newly remodeled high school as part of the district’s observance of National Education Week. Work remaining to be done at the elementary school was the multi-purpose gymnasium floor. At Central work to be done included the hook-up of the fire alarm system and intercommunication system and the installation of acoustical tile in the band and choir rooms.

Oct. 17, 1974 – The Glenwood Board of Education severed its ties to the old football field on First Street Southeast by agreeing to quit the claim deed. The board, however, chose to request that junior high athletes still be allowed to practice there even though the property belonged to the city of Glenwood.

A Springfield man took the first legal muskie from Lake Minnewaska when he caught a 9-pound fish in front of Torgy’s. He was in town to work on painting the clinic and was staying at Torgy’s and fishing in waders in waist-deep water in front of the resort.

Glenwood captured its second Central Gopher Conference cross-country title and placed three runners on the five-man all-conference team. The three were Tim Kramer, Kevin Backman and Dan Moe. Individual winners at the meet included those three as well as Rick Hippert, Neil Witikko, Brad Erlandson and Randy Hovland.

Oct. 18, 1984 – Heavy rains threw a large wrench into area harvesting. Jack Morris, county extension agent, said that the 3.1 inches he measured at his house in two days might effect both yields and the cost of bringing in the crop. He also said that other areas of the county had measured up to 5 inches of rain.

Four Glenwood elementary teachers, Bonnie Stock, Jean Nyhammer, Linda Erno and Marlene Nelson, had attended a two-day workshop on technology in Minneapolis. They later discussed the new technology using computers, cable TV, videotaping, etc. with the District No. 612 school board.

The Mayo Clinic’s air ambulance created quite a stir when the helicopter landed at the Glacial Ridge Hospital. The ambulance was in its first week of service to Glenwood, which was on the outer perimeter of Mayo’s service. Air time from Rochester to Glenwood was about an hour.

Oct. 17, 1994 – Mayor Don Schaub had signed a proclamation which declared Wednesday, Oct. 19, as WASP Recognition Day. The city and the Glenwood Area Chamber of Commerce sponsored this effort in saluting industry in the Glenwood area on an annual basis.

Emily Crabtree’s and Angie Weber’s kindergarten classes were pictured in the Tribune visiting the Glenwood Fire Hall. They visited the hall in observance of Fire Prevention Week. Firefighters David Perryman and Charlie Vadnais explained their job to the kindergartners and the importance of fire safety.

The Minnewaska Lakers football team won its final home game against Albany 21-6. The win improved Minnewaska’s record to 3-4 and solidified their playoff chances. The Minnewaska Lakers Tennis team took top honors in subsection 2-6A at the Courts Racquet Club in Fargo. The Lakers had been seeded third going into the event. Members of the team were pictured in the Tribune and included Angie Erickson, Amanda Barsness, Jenna Schlueter, Sarah Fossen, Connie Cihlar, Carol Schroeder, Carrie Buysse, Missy Tangen, Melissa Listug, Andrea Nelsen, Marin Hustad, Nancy Nyhammer, Tamy Hoium, Tammy Koob and Head Coach Don Nelson.

Oct. 11, 2004 – On Saturday, Oct. 16, and Sunday, Oct. 17, Minnewaska Area High School students, under the direction of Kris Goracke, presented Fool’s Gold, a two-act melodrama.

Students at E.N. Nordgaard Elementary learned about fire safety from the teachers and the Glenwood Fire Department. Kindergarten classes took a field to the fire station to learn from firefighters Corey Logan and Scott Kruger about what to do if they found a fire. Students’ questions were answered, and they even got to spend time in the trucks learning about equipment.

Starbuck native Tammy Salonen opened a fitness center in Glenwood, offering aerobics, strength training, a juice bar and more. Minnewaska Wellness and Fitness will host its grand opening on Oct. 15 and 16. It had been Salonen’s dream to return to the area and start a fitness center to help people feel better about their health. “It’s not just about appearances,” said Salonen, “It’s about healthy living and daily activities. People have a misconception about healthy living. It’s really about feeling good.”

Oct. 13, 2014 – Sauk Centre and Villard Fire Departments responded to a call at 10 Mile Tavern near Westport. The fire reportedly started in a wall of the building in the basement, and was quickly contained by firefighters. The Glenwood Fire Department was called to provide mutual aid, but the fire was under control before they arrived, it was reported.

With the historic Fremad building officially tax-forfeited and in the hands of the county, Pope County Commissioners discussed the property’s fate. The Fremad building, built in 1886 with additions in 1874 and 1919, was located at 18 South Franklin Street in downtown Glenwood.

The Minnewaska girls’ tennis team had a stellar year, going 17-2 over the regular season, undefeated 8-0 in conference play and a top 10 ranking in state polls. They earned the #1 seed in the Section 6A tournament, held in St. Cloud. All of that would have been nice, but the team took the next step, defeating three teams and advancing to the state tournament!
