110 YEARS AGO

From Oct. 16, 1914

A.N. Thorstad is rapidly completing the addition to his building. So far he has not bought a foot of lumber. For years he has been saving boxes and odds and ends. Out of these he was able to build the entire addition.

Earl R. Neville, who has leased the Du Glada theatre, ordered a piano from the Cities and will have it installed in a few days. A large crowd attended the performance Sunday night. Mr. Neville’s statement of his plans to provide people of Starbuck with a first class picture show was well received and roundly applauded.

Report of Grand View School District No. 95: Number of pupils enrolled, 15; average daily attendance, 13; pupils who were neither absent nor tardy during the past month are Alice and Hannah Svensrud, Anna Ruthland and Agnes Tollefson. Lulu, Alma and Clarence Anderson attended 19 days. Visitors were Oscar, Myrtle and Ida Hagestuen. -Olga Nordstrom, teacher.

100 YEARS AGO

From Oct. 17, 1924

The health pageant at the town hall last Saturday evening attracted a large number of people. The first scene depicted the care of the sickroom, Miss Alice Brenden acting as nurse and Miss Ruth Wollan the patient. Miss Eldred Gorder demonstrated giving the baby’s bath; Miss Winona Jorgenson the need of a medicine cabinet and what to keep on hand. Rhoda Tolstad showed how to dress a wound. Miss Ragna Olmeim demonstrated first aid in drowning, and Miss Alida Skaaden removed a foreign particle from the eye, and also showed how to stop bleeding from the nose. Miss Wollan explained the proper method to use in case of colic and fainting. Diplomas were presented to the girls by Mrs. Elmer Erickson on behalf of Miss Wallin, the county nurse. Piano selections were given by the Misses Flack and Bly.

While Elmer Braaten, son of Erick Braaten of Langhei, was driving home one rainy evening last week after hauling a load of grain to Starbuck, a large car driven by Ed Gilbertson of this village crashed into the wagon, throwing the boy out. He was momentarily stunned, and when he got up he discovered the team had disappeared with the front wheels. The team came home with the front part of the wagon.

A baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Thompson at the Minnewaska hospital last Thursday, Oct. 9.

80 YEARS AGO

From Oct. 19, 1944

Miss Olive Lucille Dalva, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Olaf Dalva and Knute J. Klevann, son of Paul P. Klevann were married October 15 at the Fron Lutheran Church. The couple will make their home on the Klevann farm in White Bear Lake Township.

A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Julian Stadsvold at the Minnewaska Hospital Friday.

A number of relatives and friends helped Frances Larson celebrate her 10th birthday Wednesday and on Sunday they celebrated Adeline’s 14th birthday.

Funeral services for Tosten C. Lien, 95, were held from the West Zion Lutheran Church Thursday. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. A.N. (Annie) Selland.

Pfc. Herman Larson came home Sunday evening from Fort Know, Kentucky to spend a 13-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Syver Larson of Walden.

Miss Deloris Aslakson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Asklakson and Magnus Ottoson and the late Otto Ottoson were married Oct. 14 at the West Zion parsonage. The couple will make their home on the groom’s farm in Walden.

70 YEARS AGO

From Oct. 14, 1954

A daughter was born Monday to Mr. and Mrs. Walter Stoa. Mother and daughter are getting along nicely at the Glenwood hospital.

A daughter, Julie Ann, was born to Dr. and Mrs. Kenneth Johnson on Thursday. This is their second girl. Mrs. Johnson is the former Sylvia Nelson, and is a sister of Mrs. Herman Rosby.

LeRoy Milton, a 9-pound boy, was born Monday morning to the Rev. and Mrs. L.C. Anderson at the Benson hospital. He is their second son.

Beverly Olson, Macalester college sophomore from Starbuck, has been elected president of Wood Hall, women’s residence at Macalester college, St. Paul. She is majoring in elementary education, and has been very active in affairs at Wood Hall. She is a member of LSA, Lutheran student group on campus, and Future Teachers of America. Beverly is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Olson of Starbuck.

Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Jellum were honored on their silver wedding anniversary by about 200 relatives and friends at their home in White Bear Lake township Sunday afternoon and evening, Oct. 3.

60 YEARS AGO

From Oct. 15, 1964

James Eichelberger of Lowry has been named a crew leader for the 1964 census of agriculture. The new crew leader is one of about 1,825 persons throughout the United States to receive this appointment.

Ken Davis of Starbuck was awarded the Scouter of the Year award for Lake District 4 at the annual Scouter meeting and recognition dinner of the Lake District 4 held in Benson.

Mr. Fennie and his high school band can feel very proud of themselves as the Starbuck High School marching band carried home a beautiful trophy from their first real marching band contest. Our high school band represented our school and community in the Mankato State College homecoming celebration last Saturday. As usual, their performance was great.

50 YEARS AGO

From Oct. 17, 1974

Mr. and Mrs. Marvin “Super Pete” Pederson announced this week that they are celebrating 20 years of being in the grocery business in Starbuck. To observe this special event, the Pedersons in addition to their normal grocery specials, are giving away over 30 valuable prizes including a TV set as the grand prize. 

A group of very close friends and relatives honored Mr. and Mrs. Carl Dahlseng at the Fron Church parlors on Sunday afternoon in observance of their recent 25th anniversary. Among guests were relatives and friends from London, England, Minneapolis, Parkers Prairie, Lowry, Terrace and Glenwood.

Mr. and Mrs. James Maki and Paul announce the arrival of Aaron James Toan Maki, born March 4, 1974, in Can Tho, S. Vietnam. He arrived at the Minneapolis airport on Wednesday, October 16. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Walter Maki of Aurora. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kaler of Hoyt Lakes.

From Oct. 17, 1984

It will be 30 years on Thursday, October 18, that Pedersons Supermarket of Starbuck has been in business. As a means of celebration and to express their appreciation to all, Marvin (Pete) and Rosalie Pederson, the owners, are inviting the public to share in the celebration. 

Recognized as Student of the Week at Starbuck High School is Tom Frank, a member of the class of 1985. During his school career, Tom has been active in football, basketball, track, band, stage band and was the vice president of his class during his sophomore year. Besides high school sports, Tom also enjoys hunting and fishing. The son of Bob and Donna Frank, Tom plans to attend college to study computers or electronics.

County 4-H members were honored with various awards at the 4-H Achievement Banquet on October 6 at the Lakeside Ballroom in Glenwood. Carolyn Bryce and Janet Thompson were the “I Dare You” award winners. Barb Klimek, Amy Oeltjen and Kathy Morris were Kay award winners. Michelle Maher and Gary Sansness were Conservation award winners.  Trish Bryce, Ryan Sansness and Ann Philipsen were recognized as Outstanding first year members. Ann Hanson of Glenwood and Myra Reese of Hancock were the first recipients of the alumni award which recognizes citizens for their long time association with 4-H and their service to the community.

From Oct. 12, 1994

Greg Larson was pictured in the Times as a member of the 1994 Homecoming Royalty at the Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf in Faribault. He is the son of Roger and Grace Larson of Starbuck.

Josie Hoffman, daughter of Vickie and Jim Hoffman of Starbuck and a 1994 MAHS Laker co-captain in volleyball, is a starter for the University of Minnesota, Morris Cougars volleyball team this fall.

The football cheerleaders for the 1994 season were pictured in the Times. They were Sarah DeSmith, Anne Bösl, Sara Bogie, Jenny Smith, Charity Skogrand, Elizabeth Peterson, Sara Swartz and Alicia Schumacher. Not pictured were alternate Raebekah Moe and advisor Julie Resch.

20 YEARS AGO

From Oct. 13, 2004 

Carol and Arne Stoen hosted Arne’s extended family from Norway for a visit to the United States. Pictured in the Times with Carol and Arne were Jan Morten Høglo, Tove Trefjord Høglo, Ida Margrete Høglo, Arne Martin Høglo and Jon Bendik Høglo. Jan and Arne’s grandmothers were sisters. The Høglo family stayed with the Stoen’s at their rural Starbuck farm for about 10 days. Arne and Carol had found their extended family during a trip to Norway in 2002.

Vanessa Pooch, a member of the Minnesota Area FFA Chapter, attend the Minnesota State Fair and showed cattle for the FFA Livestock show. While exhibiting, Vanessa also participated in Beef Showmanship where she was named Reserve Champion Showperson. This is a very high honor, as there were over 100 FFA exhibitors in the beef category. Vanessa is the daughter of Vernon and Sonia Pooch of the rural Farwell area. 

Performances of “Fool’s Gold” will be presented this Saturday and Sunday at Minnewaska Area High School. Cast members include: Steven Gremmels, Mitch Johnson, Emma Hustad, Billy Hansen, Melissa Koos, Cody Bosek, Mikayla Critz, Jesse Duhn, Chris Bot, Javen Pauly, Paige Cooley and Jessie Moe. The cast is under the direction of Kris Goracke.

The candidates for the City of Starbuck Mayor and Council open positions gave their thoughts and opinions during a candidate forum put on October 7 at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home. For Mayor, the choices are Dori S. Ann and Gary Swenson. Three candidates, Cary Jenson, Tom Spychalla and Ted Razink are looking to fill the two open four-year positions. Steve Gorder is running for the two-year council position unopposed. 

It’s official: Those who knowingly provide a party place in Pope County involving alcohol for underage drinkers can now be charged with a misdemeanor. The ASAP (Against Substance Abuse in Pope) coalition, with support from the sheriff’s department, has been working on passing a social host ordinance since January 2014.
