Band Notice: A meeting will be held in the schoolhouse by Rev. N. Forde’s on Monday evening, November 9, at 8:00 o’clock for the purpose of organizing a band. All interested be sure to attend. -H.C. Berg, band instructor.
E.H. Dahl and John Skoglund returned Tuesday evening from a hunting trip in South Dakota. They got 72 ducks and two geese.
The Immanuel Ladies’ Aid met at Mrs. L.E. Berg’s on Thursday, October 29. The proceeds totaled $28.50. The money was sent to the starving in China, in care of Rev. George R. Lillegaard, who has charge of the mission field there.
L. Olson and Jens Hanson have purchased a corn thresher, and expect to be busy as grasshoppers threshing corn this fall.
Received a sweet letter from Babe Thorstad Schumann: “It is indeed a pleasure for me to read your Glimpses Into the Past and read about what happened 50 years ago to my father. You cannot imagine the thrill I get when I see Daddy’s name in print. Thank you so much for the happiness you give me in a memory of a great man, and the love we shared so short a time.”

S.O. Koland bought the feed barn from the Standard Lumber company this week. He did not buy the barn for the purpose of using it for a feed barn but is willing to keep it open for that purpose if there a demand among the farmers for it.
On Sunday, November 16, the cornerstone will be laid and the new church parlors dedicated in Fron congregation. Rev. I.T. Aastad, president of the Northern Minnesota district, will officiate. All the pastors of the Glenwood circuit have been invited to take part. The discussion for the afternoon will follow the outline of thoughts in the 13th chapter of Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, “Faith, Hope and Love.”
Minnewaska Hospital Benefit Very Successful: A large crowd thronged the town hall afternoon and evening, enjoying the sumptuous food prepared and served by experts. An indication of the generosity of the donors, and the large number of guests served, may be gathered from these facts: 1,000 rolls, 30 loaves of bread, 60 chickens, 115 pounds of lutefisk, 90 pies, 14 pounds of coffee, sugar, cream, potatoes, etc., were consumed. The proceeds, all clear profit, will be used as much-needed equipment for the hospital.

Oswald Berg, Peder and Ednard Barsness this week received a contract to haul freight between Minneapolis and Chicago for the United Truck Co. and will start their new routes this week. They have each purchased new van bodies and semi-trailers for this work.
Melvin Foss and Walter Simonson will work for them, Foss driving for the Barsness boys and Simonson for Berg.
Mr. Berg and Mr. Barsness will move their families to Minneapolis next week.

Among those from Starbuck who witnessed the Big Ten game at Minneapolis between Michigan and Minnesota last Saturday were: Dr. and Mrs. A.F. Giesen, Dr. and Mrs. W.W. Larson, Mr. and Mrs. Edw. S. Olson and Thomas, I.H. Helgeson, Elmer Alberg, Eugene Ophaug, Ralph Anderson, Tilman Smedstad, Clarence Friedman, Lorraine Blixseth, Dorothy Wollan and Earl Wollan.
Those who attended the St. Olaf-Luther game at Northfield on Saturday were Sylvan Opheim, Olaf Engne, Gilmar Johnson, Mrs. Anton Aaberg and Mable, Will Danelz, Olaf, Oscar, William and. Ethel Smedstad, Mrs. J. Schelin, Lester and Odell Smedstad, H.R. Engebretson, Claremont and Eldred Gorder, Ella Berge, Mary Caughren and Alice Lindstrom.
Merlin Elie, Alfred Aaberg and Ovid Smedstad, three Starbuck lads played in the game. It rained during the game which made it very disagreeable for the fans and more so for the players who were forced to play with a water-soaked ball. St. Olaf won the game 13 to 0, although Luther was favored to win by Twin City sport scribes.
The village recently purchased a 3-acre wood lot in Minnewaska Township from Mrs. Edith Brevig. On Tuesday about 25 men started to cut the wood which will be used for relief purpose this winter.

Miss Ruth Lorraine Swenson of Elbow Lake and Reuben Brenden, son of John Brenden, were married at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Elbow Lake Friday evening. The couple would make their home on a farm south of Starbuck.
Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Heggestad had their baby daughter, Ruth Ann, baptized at the Indherred Church. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Glaubitz and Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Baukol.
Miss Marjorie Burnett of near Morris and Carsten Lerdahl of Cyrus were married Oct. 23. The couple would make their home on the groom’s father’s farm.
Mrs. Donald Bollum received a message from the War Department stating that her husband, Cpl. Donald Bollum, 30, had been killed in action somewhere in France Oct. 13.

The Rev. Luthard O. Gjerde executive director of the Lutheran Welfare Society in Minnesota, has announced that the annual Lutheran World Relief Thanksgiving Clothing Appeal will be held from Sunday, November 7, to Sunday November 28. Last year’s national response to the Clothing Appeal resulted in a gathering of nearly 300,000 pounds. The needs of people in Germany, Korea and the Holy Land and other places makes it of the utmost importance that we meet this challenge.
The new aerating system for city water in Starbuck is expected to be in full operation sometime this week. Some tests and other routine check-ups may delay its full operation immediately, but everything is in readiness.
The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Wesen was baptized Robert Mark at the Minnewaska church Sunday, October 31. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. David Samuelson and Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Alfson.
St. John’s Lutheran church was the scene of a beautiful wedding on Saturday evening, October 16, 1954, when Miss Carolyn Kjera, daughter of Mrs. John Kjera, Starbuck, and Donald Pederson, son of Edward Pederson, Benson, pledged their marriage vows in a double ring ceremony. Rev. G.O. Forde gave the sermonette, and Rev. Oliver Pederson, brother of the groom, performed the marriage ceremony.

Selected to reign as Homecoming and All-Campus Queen at the University of Minnesota, Morris last week was Miss Lou Ann Barsness, a senior student from Starbuck. Miss Barsness is majoring in physical education at U.M.M. She is the daughter of Mrs. Adeline Barness and a graduate of Starbuck High School.
The winners in the Halloween costume contest were as follows: Girls’ first prize – Cheryl Lind; girls’ second prize – Mara Totushek; boys’ first prize – Mark Deaner; boys second prize – Donald Dahlseng.
Miss Julie Ann Solberg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M.D. Solberg, and LeRoy Pochardt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ludwig Pochardt of Morris, were married on October 9 in the Fron Church Chapel by Rev. Paul G. Tolo. The maid of honor was Miss Diane Sillerud and the bridesmaid, Miss Carol Sundheim. The best man was Jack Pochardt and the groomsman, Ronald Carlson.
Nancy Erickson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur J. Erickson is a recent graduate of the Institute of Medical Technology in Minneapolis. She is now employed as a laboratory and X-ray technician at the Fergus Falls State Hospital.
The Starbuck Bucks ended this year’s football season as co-champions with Graceville of the Pheasant Conference. Starbuck was undefeated this year, having one tie with Graceville.

T.A. Brevig was the lucky winner this week of $150.00 Starbuck Bucks as he was present at the Starbuck Cement Products appliance building.
Buckettes rated no. 1 in District 21. Buckettes beat Herman in tourney play on Tuesday by a score of 49-36.
Schumacher, David Nelson, Arness, Vold, Flaten and Boyle win in elections.
White Bear Lake township adopts a building-zoning ordinance.
Oscar Opdahl left for his home at Sask., Canada last week after visiting relatives and friends in the Starbuck area for a few weeks.

Robert and Bonnie Erickson are the parents of a baby girl, Judy Marie born Oct. 17.
Funeral services for Inga Lorvig, 88, will be held today at Fron Lutheran Church. She is survived by three children: Robert Samuelson and Dorothy Norum of Minneapolis and Ruth Herbst of St. Paul and three stepchildren: Olive Nyholm of Sun City, Arizona, Lester Lorvig of Phoenix, Arizona and Phyllis Bevis of Atlanta, Georgia.
United Bank of Academy Place in Colorado Springs, Colorado has promoted Daniel J. Rundgren to Commercial Loan Officer. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Rundgren of Starbuck.
Senior co-captains, Shaun Stottler and Doug Toivonen, along with senior Mike Syverson have been named to the 1984 Pheasant Conference North All-Conference Team. Senior Mike Lagua was chosen as an honorable mention selection.

Memorial and burial services for David Naig, 47, were held at West Zion Lutheran Church Sept. 22. He is survived by his parents, Arnold and Lorraine Naig of Starbuck; three brothers, Keith of rural Clontarf, Charles of Elk River and James of rural Hancock; and one sister, Linda (Mrs. Judd Crosby) of Kansas City, Missouri.
The Starbuck Chamber of Commerce welcomed Karen Andreas Hair Styles at her new location at 709 Holly Ridge Drive in Starbuck.
Darla Dianne Kalt of Warner, SD and Troy Erickson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Erickson of Glenwood were married July 23 a St. John’s Lutheran Church in Warner. The couple will make their home in Fargo, ND.

The Starbuck Times went to press early Tuesday morning, but voter turnout was already steady at the Starbuck Senior Center where City of Starbuck, Minnewaska Township and White Bear Lake Township residents casted their votes. Local election judges said voters were lined up at the door when the poll opened at 7 a.m. and as of 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning, 125 votes had already been cast.
A fire at an abandoned house in Minnewaska Township on Thursday is suspected to have been ignited by an arsonist, according to Pope County Sheriff Tom Larson. Starbuck and Glenwood fire departments responded to the fire call around 1:30 p.m. Larson said no one was hurt and his office is investigating the fire.
Retired Starbuck police chief Bruce Gilbertson recently received a service award from the Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association. The award recognizes Gilbertson’s service as Starbuck’s top cop from 1982 through late 2003. The plaque was presented to the Starbuck City Council on October 18 by Morris police chief Jim Beauregard. Gilbertson was unable to attend the meeting but recently picked up the plaque and said retirement is keeping him very busy.
Walter and Mildred Hedlin, originally of rural Lowry, celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary on October 22. The couple farmed west of Lowry and had four boys. Mildred explained that she and Walter attended the same church and participated in lots of activities together. “So naturally we got a lot closer,” she said. When asked for the couple’s advice to other married couples, Walter wisely recommended, “Be very tolerant of each other.” The couple now resides at Minnewaska Lutheran Home, and they celebrated the momentous occasion with friends, family, cake and coffee.

Friends of Glacial Lakes State Park volunteered to help the Glacial Lakes State Park remove leaves from the Lower Campground of the State Park last Saturday, Oct. 25. Eleven members and four children showed up to tackle the project. Special Thanks to Randy Hagen who allowed the members to use three powered blowers which helped a great deal in moving the leaves into piles, it was stated. The members then piled the leaves onto tarps to be hauled away. A great lunch was provided by the members who helped themselves to a hardy potluck dinner of tater tot hot dish, homemade chili, homemade taco soup, salad, and Jolene’s “I wish I could remember what was in those things” bars. Members and friends pictured in the Times are: Jolene Moen, Amy Schones, Sonya Glysen, Richard Bond, Carter Moen, Patty Bond and Jessica Ryan. Taking the picture was Kristin Reichmann. Not pictured but helping out were Neil Lagason and Corbin Corson.
Minnewaska Lutheran Home held their annual Halloween costume contest Friday afternoon. First place went to Hula girls Elizabeth Green and her daughter Betty Fernaays. Judy Pederson got second place for her witch costume and Corrine Jackson was third place sporting the clown costume. Winners of the MLH Staff costume contest were Safety Worker Shelby Chapman (second place), llene Lehtola dressed as Pebbles from the Flinstones (first place) and Construction Worker James Nelson (third place).
This was the first year of the AAL (American Angler League) on Lake Minnewaska. For the last two years this successful circuit has been up and running on Lake Minnetonka and Lake Waconia, and this year it expanded out to Lake Minnewaska. The kids fished for six weeks every Tuesday night from 4:30 till 7:00. A total of nine kids and parents participated this year on Minnewaska.
