This month the Prairie Lakes Audubon Chapter will host (a Zoom meeting)Eric Matteson who will speak about the Zumbro Valley Audubon Society’s (ZVAS) Motus network installation in the National Park of Tikal in Guatemala.

The Motus Wildlife Tracking System is a global research network that uses radio telemetry to monitor and track the movements of birds, bats, insects, and other animals.

Eric Matteson, M.D., M.P.H., is a member of the Zumbro Valley Audubon Society and Board. He is a native of Nebraska, and now emeritus Professor of Medicine and Emeritus Chair, Division of Rheumatology at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, with joint appointment in the Division of Epidemiology in the Department of Health Sciences Research.

During the Zoom meeting, he will explain how ZVAS sponsored and established a Motus tracking station in the National Park of Tikal in Guatemala to aid in tracking birds that migrate from South and Central America to North America, including Minnesota.  His talk will be of special interest, since there are not many Motus towers in this area.  Anyone is welcome to join the meeting to learn about this technology that helps scientists better understand the travels of our migrating birds.
