The Minnewaska Area wrestling team battled seventh-ranked Little Falls, Thursday, during the Albany triangular.  The Lakers led 15-0 after three matches and 26-6 after six before the Flyers won the final seven matches to claim a 44-26 victory.

The Lakers also beat Albany the same night, 66-12, winning nine matches by forfeits.

Minnewaska Area, which improved to 13-6 overall and 5-1 in the conference, also competed in a quadrangular at BOLD, Friday, Jan. 24, winning all three matches against BOLD (52-17), Tracy Area (57-15) and Benson (58-17).

The Lakers were also set to compete at the combined WCC/Camden Conference Meet, Saturday at Dawson-Boyd, but results of that competition will be highlighted next week.

Minnewaska Area is also set to compete at the Pelican Rapids quadrangular, Thursday, to close out the regular-season.

The Section 8AA Team Tournament is slated to begin Thursday, Feb. 13 and the Lakers have a great chance at hosting the first-round matches.  The top four teams will play host and the Final Four teams remaining go back to DGF, Friday, Feb. 14 for the finals to determine who will represent the section at the State Wrestling Tournament.

The Lakers have nine wrestlers with double-digit wins and a .500 record or better — Miles Wildman (30-4), Chase Smith (25-8), Alex Adams (24-8), Landon Schiffler (23-8), Noah Jensen (23-10), Isaiah Rosario (22-14), Braylen Scharmer (19-14), Riley Dell (16-6) and Jude Bailey (11-11).

BOLD quadrangular

The Lakers earned three big wins at the BOLD triangular, Friday, Jan. 24, beating Tracy Area (57-15), BOLD (52-17) and Benson (58-17) by similar margins.

Among the Lakers winning all three matches was Miles Wildman, who earned his 125th career victory during the triangular.

Also winning three times were Landon Schiffler, Jude Bailey, Riley Dell and Noah Jensen.

The Lakers won 10 matches against Tracy Area, including pins by Jude Bailey at 145 pounds, Sawyer Erickson at 152, Sawyer Taufen at 160, Braylen Scharmer at 189 pounds, Riley Dell at 215 and Noah Jensen at 285.

The Lakers trailed 15-11 after five matches before winning the final eight contests.

•  Minnewaska Area won another 10 matches against BOLD, including pins by Landon Schiffler, Austyn Schuler, Chase Smith, Isaiah Rosario, Riley Dell and Noah Jensen.

This time, the Lakers stormed out to a 36-0 lead before BOLD won three of the next four to cut the Laker lead to 40-17.  Dell and Jensen closed out the match with quick pins.

•  In the final match, the Lakers won 10 matches for the third-straight time, including pins by Landon Schiffler, Miles Wildman, Chase Smith and Noah Jensen.

Minnewaska Area led 29-0 after five matches before Benson won three of the next five to cut the Laker lead to 40-17.

Less than 1 1/2 minutes later, the Lakers ended the contest 58-17 as Tate Anderson and Riley Dell earned forfeit wins and Noah Jensen had his third-straight pin in 1:27.

Albany triangular

The Lakers split a pair of matches at the Albany triangular, Thursday, routing Albany in one match, 66-12, and also losing a close match to state-ranked Little Falls in the other, 44-26.

Against Albany, Landon Schiffler (107), Miles Wildman (121), Austyn Schuler (127), Chase Smith (133), Isaiah Rosario (139), Jack Payne (160), Braylen Scharmer (172), Riley Dell (215) and Noah Jensen (285) all earned forfeit wins.

Also winning for the Lakers were Jude Bailey at 145 pounds, with a pin in 4:38, and Sawyer Erickson at 152 pounds, who also won by a fall in 1:55.

•  During the match against Little Falls, the Lakers won the first three matches and five of the first six, but the Flyers earned seven-straight victories to close out the match, including five by pin and one on a technical fall, to earn the 44-26 victory.

Alex Adams (pin in 3:14), Landon Schiffler (7-5 decision) and Miles Wildman (pin in 28 seconds) won the first three matches for the Lakers for an early 15-0 lead.  

After a win by Little Falls at 127 pounds, Chase Smith (18-1 technical fall) and Isaiah Rosario (pin in 1:08) pushed the Laker lead to 26-6, but it was all Little Falls from there.
